What is a very slicey AND robust knife

Looking for knife suggestions (fixed and folding) that are excellent slicers and also very robust. Strong locks, strong tips, something you can really beat on and yet is very slicey. Something as slicey as an Opinel yet as strong as a Esee 5 (ok, that is an exaggeration but you get the idea) . Do such mythical beasts exist?

Seconds on the Carothers FK2, I have the bad idea which was thinner behind the edge and heat treated a little higher level (to the best of my knowledge, I could be wrong on these details) and it cuts like a laser. Unicorns do exist

Thanks. The Carothers FK2 is what I had in mind. Now, how do I order one? Went to their website but no way to order 🤷‍♂️

It depends what you are slicing.

Food, cardboard, rope have different sliceatrons and therefore use different knife shapes.

For a folder, look no further than Spyderco's Gayle Bradley 1 and 2. Thick, ergonomic handle, hollow ground CPM-M4 blade. Mine has been serving me well since 2013.

What you're looking for is a bit of an misnomer oxymoron.. (Cheers DocJD DocJD for reminding me of the word I couldn't think of)

I will say the Spyderco Native Chief (mine is in REX45) is plenty tough and sturdy, and it slices like a laserbeam. I use it for food prep all the time. I wouldn't baton wood with it though, so your mileage may vary...

Depending on what you want to cut, a decent utility knife may work too. They are tough and slice well.

Cold Steel Espada large or XL very slicey with a very stout locking system. If your worried about the tip go with a Rajah-2 or a 4- Max Tank.

I’ll take this one step further and say Olamic 247. I have a bowie in S90V, and the blade profile is similar to the PM2s, but it doesn’t get quite as fragile near the tip…although you can find a PM2 in just about any steel you can think of, like 4V, Cruwear, M4, some really tough steels. And you can buy 2 for the price of the Olamic. Can’t go wrong w/either IMO..

Also can’t go wrong with a ZT 0562! Not super thin, but thin enough for me, and plenty durable…you can get those LNIB or close to it, in the low $200s on the exchange here quite often

For fixed blades, check out a Hinderer Ranch Bowie. They just dropped a bunch at DLT and some other sites (non supporting vendors).187” thick, 3V steel, and enough room to drop down pretty thin BTE, for what it is. ZT also has a new fixed blade in 3V for around the same price.

Edit to add : USA made blade is also a great place to find the ZTs and Hinderers when they pop up.

Define a slicey task. Slicey is thin. Try fanning a very fresh baby zucchini without breaking it. You almost need a scalpel. Like a Havalon Piranta. Not too flexible.

Slicey, thin and robust? Pick any two.
