Hi

I just heard about a steel called ats-48. I never heard of it before. Does anyone know what it is and if it’s any good?

ATS steel is made by Hitachi metals.
I have never heard "ATS-48".
ATS series is only ATS-34 and ATS-55.
ATS-34 is well known steel.
And, ATS-55 is hardly used to make a factory knives.

ATS-55 chart:
C 1.00
Cr 14.0
Co 0.40
Cu 0.20
Mn 0.50
Mo 0.60
Si 0.40

Maybe it was a missprint for ATS-8A?

"And, ATS-55 is hardly used to make a factory knives." From a post by Machida

While probably now true, ATS-55 was used by Spyderco in a number of its knives at various times, most notably in their Endura and Delica models. I have both and I find that it is a very good steel for the purpose, an inexpensive production knife. It is certainly a good deal easier to resharpen than ATS-34 and rather less subject to chippping that the SOG Tomcat that I have in ATS-34.

HAHAHAHAHAHA...Man, I can be a real dumb-ass in the morning...I ment "AUS-8A"...Nevermind.:D

The ats-48 comes from a friend who just recently bought a MAC kitchen knife. The seller had told him it was made of ats-48. I’m not familiar with the brand, and a visit to their web side doesn’t tell about ats-48 but of a special alloy instead. So who knows what it might be?

Thanks that might explain it - AUS-8(A?) and ATS-48 does in a way look the same on print.

I'm still waiting for ATS-51. It is reputed to be the latest and greatest in reverse-engineered alien metal technology. It is tougher and holds a better edge than anything out there. Stealthy too as it has an almost invisible radar and x-ray profile. ATS-51 is the steel to look for...
