What is "bad form" on forum sales???

I just had another forumite back out of a sale. I was selling a CRKT M16-14 Military for $40 shipped! I thought that was a good deal considering most sites have them for $60 and up. Then, the guys sends me a post saying he can get a bead blast standard version(NOT the military) for $50 shipped and that is a better deal so he is backing out of the sale THREE DAYS after I have already posted it sold. IMHO that is bad form and should not be done! What do you guys consider "Bad Form" on a sale or trade??

I would say what you described is bad form. I would be tempted to put the offender's name in the GB&U forum. The only question is ugly, bad, or both?

I understand you being ticked off Jason but I would not post this on the GBU.. The reason being is you still have your knife and did not loose out on any money. Backing out, though frustrating, is somewhat common and I would just repost the knife.

Reserve the GBU only when you get ripped off.

I disagree. Backing out like this is bad form for sure. They had a deal. The seller took the knife off the market, maybe turned away other potential buyers, because he thought the knife was sold. I've had buyers back out on me and it causes a lot of aggravation and extra hassles.

As a buyer, once you make that commitment, you have an obligation to complete the purchase. Especially in the For Sale Forum, we work on a "my word is my bond" honor code. When someone doesn't keep that code, that's a GB&U issue.

If a buyer will break that code in this respect, will he go further, perhaps not pay? Other sellers need to be alerted that this fellow is questionable.

I echo your sentiments. I've been around here since the day Spark lit off this site and have engaged in a fair amount of buying and selling. Until recently I've never had a problem. Now I have one bloke who has said that he's resending a MO that had been returned (still haven't received it) and another who never had the courtesy to say he was backing out and has further compounded things by refusing to answer my e-mails asking what's up.

When we had less than a 1000 forumites you'd never hear of such nonsense. Now, just as we find with some of the wacko postings unfortunately this sort of crap seems more prevalent. I don't want to come off as elitist, it's just that as the numbers have grown, so has the fringe which doesn't seem to embrace common courtesies.

3 days-you should have already had the MO, not an email saying he found a better deal.
Shows a total lack of character. I thought GB&U was to help us see who is good to deal with, and who isn't.
My few dealings with fellow forumites has been very pleasant, and I've posted good feedback on each of them after the deal was completed. If someone screws me around, they can expect to see some feedback, too.

I don't plan to do the GBU posting but I did put his name and copied the email text into the FS post I had up. That way anyone looking at the posting would see that I was not playing games with the knives but that I actually had back outs.
Just last week I bought a knife late at night off the FS forum and changed my mind the next morning. I STILL went to the post office and put the M.O. in the mail because I had "shook hands" on the deal. (My understanidng of what an email works as in this setting) IMHO it was MY problem that I changed my mind and now MY responsibility to resell the knife if I don't want it. I am a newbie here but I just figured that was protocol!?! Thanks for the input guys!

The situation described above will occur regardless of any actions on my part or any posting in the GBU.

A possible solution is actually in the upgrade of the UBB software we use here. We will upgrade after we feel all the bugs are worked out but in the upgrade you can actually "rate" another member and this may help identify possible problem members who back out of deals. As long as no monies have exchanged hands there is no "real" harm done.

I know it is frustrating but you have to deal with it and repost the item. If a certain member has a history of doing this, then we can step in but only if there is a history and not just a 1 case incident. We in no way can force someone to buy something. Also it is generally understood that there is a 3 day right of refusal in most states. Keep in mind we all have the right to change our minds. Don't take it personal and just move on. Also in your post you may want to say "Sold pending payment" instead of "Sold" this give you a way out as well and give the person a deadline to have the payment in to you. Should you not receive payment offer it to the next person in line.

Mike, when you say 'rate' members, what do you mean exactly? Are we talking on the basis of backing out of deals or the general opinion of members based upon everything they say or do?

One thing I can say is that I have never backed out of a deal, stolen or broken my word.

I may be unable to express myself well at times, but no one can call me a lier or a dishonerable cheat. Anyone that does better be ready for one hell of a fight.

I think it is poor form to butt into someone's sale thread with your "humble opinion" that the asking price is not a good deal. If you don't like the price, don't buy the knife and keep your opinions to your self.
