Hi all,

I am going to buy a large Benza. I want your opinions on the following:
1- What is better steel in edge retention and sharpness and general performance, S30v or the Damascus used by Chris?

2- What would inlays do you recommend? I have seen 2 designs. One is the normal one 2 strips of wood, the other is the one piece annual edition. What are your thoughts?

I would appreciate it if you have some pictures.

Thanks.

Take a look at this thread too:

I'm fairly certain s30v is the best performing. Personally I like the larger piece of wood on the limited edition. Here's a large redwood burl.

Damascus has more of the "cool effect." I don't think any difference in performance will matter much. The damascus all performs very well, and the stainless damascus is, of course, stainless. The steels used in both the carbon and stainless damascus are very fine grained steels, making it very easy to sharpen. S30V is a fine grained steel because of the CPM process, but the vanadium carbides in the S30v will make it harder to sharpen, while also giving it greater edge retention than the damascus. The corrosion resistance between the stainless damascus and S30v should be about equal, maybe with a slight edge to S30v.
I think you should base the decision more on what you like best when it comes to looks rather than performance. If you think the simpler look of the plain blade is better, than get it, if you like the more busy exotic look of damascus, then get it. If you care more about the price, then don't get damascus.

1-The S30V is going to stand up to every day use better than the damascus. While the Damscus is beautiful stuff it is better suited to life as a safe queen than an EDC.

2-Inlays are totally subjective. The Limited woods are going to cost more because they are limited and this is the only way you can get a regular Sebby with an inlay. The Classic woods are not nearly as expensive due to availability. It just depends on which handle/blade profile you prefer and how many duckies you're willing to part with to obtain the knife you want!

Personally, and I know I've said this before, I wish Chris would make a Regular Sebenza with canvas Micarta inlays for the general consumers that want an EDC with a little more dimmension to the handle. I have always prefered the feel of the inlayed Sebby's in the handover the flat Ti slabs, but am afraid that the wood would not stand up to the rigors of EDC. He could still keep the woods on a limited basis and offer this as an option like Double t-lugs, clip inserts, unique CGGs, etc.

I don't own a damascus Sebenza, but I do have a damascus TNT. If you can get over the idea of scratching and/or staining the blade, I think a damascus knife would make a pretty good user. I love the toothy edge damascus takes; that stuff cuts like crazy. Of course, there's that pesky little problem of resale value, but I guess it really depends on what you want to do with the knife.

Thank you for your responses,

I am looking for a user, life time user.

Is the damascus used by chris High carbon? I understand that it is stainless?

My understanding is that high carbon damascus is better in edge retention and flexability than s30v and s30v is better than stainless damascus. Am I right?

How about this, get whatever you like the best visually, the difference in performance will probably not be sufficient enough for you to notice. But you will be unhappy if you don't get what you wanted.

You can get either high carbon or stainless damascus from CRK. Most of it is Devon Thomas. For a user I'd choose the S30V strictly because it is maintenance free, but also because I don't believe that there is any better stainless steel currently available except in full custom knives where you may be able to get S90V. As for edge retention, I doubt that you'll find any damascus that can stand up to what S30V will. My 2cents for what it's worth.

Like I said before, though S30v is the real deal, as in it is a very good steel, possibly one of the best overall steels out right now, the difference in performance is going to be less noticeable than you think, unless you've been using knives a lot for a few years or more. Unless you plan on making it through the jungle with the knife, or having to chop through cardboard for several hours a day, I wouldn't worry about. Get what you think looks best, get what you want, not what you're "supposed" to want.
