I have found myself in vicious circle. I have to look at the more and more expensive knives and still can't find the best :)
I tried to find a decent folder for under 100$. Only few restrictions (screws, steel liners, no liner lock, non-plastic handle) were applied and none passed.
In over 100$ area you can find lot of great knives. Actually so many I can't decide.

1) BM710 (D2?) - around 120$, very good, but maybe little too big
2) Camillus dominator - around 150$, quite expensive, and assisted opener :(
3) Microtech L-UDT - around 155$, quite expensive, I fear of the opening spring breakage
4) BM732 - discontinued :(
5) BM707 - 3.8" closed (that means too small handle for me)
6) ??? (suggest more please)

p.s. please no opening holes, I don't like them

How about a Benchmade 940 or 943?

They have 3.4" blades. They are about $112.

The 732 is great also but hard to find.

I think the 710 is too large and the 707/705 is too small.

Benchmade needs to add more 3.5" bladed knives with good handles. Either that or they need to offer the Griptilians in G10.

I didn't like holes either. Then I handled a 14mm opening hole from Spyderco. Now I like holes a bit better. I will admit however that small holes or beveled holes (like the Skirmish) don't work for me.

I agree with you
710 is too long for me, 705 too small.
Winner is Ares. All of them discontunued, but you still can get it. I was looking for 735 or 730 and I bought 730BT three days ago. It was the last one at NGK.
You can find the on ebay. They auction for about $115-120.
soonerstate has them also http://www.soonerstateknives.com/benchmadeares.htm
Next option is BM Griptilian. Old version for $47.50 at gpknives or D2 at cabelas for $80 or new with 154CM, but I did not see them yet.
Sorry forgot, BM520 is very good knife IMO

plastic handles? do you mean frn? If so, you're eliminating most of the mid priced production folders available.

hardheart - zytel, frn, kraton
and most of the plastic handle knives are not screw constructed;
that eliminates them too :)

BM940 - blade looks weird

what do you people think of BM720? how sturdy are it's alu handles?

Eliminating liner locks voids a great many good knives. I have never had a liner lock on a quality knife fail. I do admit to liking them better if they have a safety, like the LAWKS, which prevents the liner from dis-engaging until the safety is off. I carry a large Harsey Tactical sith the 4.75 S30V blade daily. It has the Lawks. I also liek frame locks, like Benchmades monolock. These are okay because your grip on the handle prevents the lock from dis-engaging. I do not have any AXIS lock knives, but will be buying a BM Rukus soon.

I do have a Ritter Mini-grip, and it is an awesome little knife. Although, for me, I feel that the Spyderco ball bearing lock IS smoother. BUT, I do like the positive snick sound of the mini-grip when it is closing, as it closes with authority! I happen to really LOVE framelocks; as they are MY favorite!

cbxer55 - well, I know they are probably OK, but I think expensive quality knife could have a lock, that I do like :)
knifecollector - any framelock suggestions?

How much do you want to spend? What is the maximum amount of $$$ you want to spend? We will take it from there!! You could get a small or large Sebenza, you could get a Strider SNG, SMF, Benchmade Skirmish or mini Skirmish,Mission Knife & Tool MPF 1 or 3, Combat Elite RRF, as far as productions go. If you want to talk custom knives, let me know.

DUH on my part!! Bummer. If you could go to $199, I would say get the Combat Elite RRF!! It is a titanium framelock, with an S30V blade. It is a FANTASTIC knife!! I absolutely LOVE mine!!

The BM 94x series flip open very easily because of the little extra weight at the end of the blade. If it matters to you.
I have a Mini-Grip, 943 and 720, the 720 is a stout knife. I don't mind the bowie style blade. The Mini-Grip and 943 are nice knives too. Basically, if you can go handle them in person it will help you a lot.

Benchmade 710. The blade to handle ratio is very good, so it's really not that large for a knife with a blade almost 4".

It's not to big for my hand or my pocket.

As some know.. I'm PISSED at Buck (chang).
Alpha folders are nice, inexpensive and good handling folders.. if you must have a folder....
Hey upChuck.. Ge with it !
