Forgive the newbie question, and yes, I have read the FAQ and done searches, and have not found a simple explanation. Can someone please enlighten me?

Hey Raver, Welcome to "THE" Forum. A Chakma is the same as a steel you would use in the kitchen to get an edge back on a knife and the Karda is a small utility knife they both come with most all of the Khukuris you can buy from Uncle Bill and the "Boys" at HI.:D

FINALLY - one I can answer:p The Chakma (sometimes chakmak) is a blade steel, used to straighten dents and slightly folded edges. Khuks last many years, partly because the blades are re-edged this way when possible, instead of being cut away with stones.

Karda means knife - just a little utility knife traditionally included with the Chakma and big blade.

Thanks for help and welcome to the Cantina, Raver.

What part of Kansas? I grew up in Cherokee and so did brother Fred who now lives in Girard.

I'm from Colorado originally, but have lived in Osage City, Kansas, south of Topeka, for the last 8 years. The HI forum sure seems friendlier than some other parts of BF.

Raver, welcome to the HI Forum, a unique gathering of like-minded folks which, in my experience, is friendlier than most any other part of the world, on or off-line :)

Would this be a Karda, or a minature khukuri?

Raver,
Also spelled KARDATH and CHAKMAK there are many different shapes, sizes and finishes. Here are a few examples:

I guess I got more interesed in information than Emily Post :)

Not2, if that is a 1" grid your blade is on, it may be the Grandfather Kagas Katne. It appears to by only 7/8" longer than my KK, and a heck of a lot older, but with a butt cap - ? Niiiiice.

John:

That pic evokes almost the same emotion as a basket full of puppies. Thank You.

Yep, the friendliest place online for sure!!!!
And the reason is that we have the best forum host and moderators anywhere.:D

N2S,
Nice little kukri. My guess is that if it comes with its own scabbard or is obviously made to be a miniature, it's not a karda. Here are 2 (warm puppies?)that are miniature khukuris and did you notice in my other picture the size on those large ones? Big honkers for big old knives.

John, you know I hate it when my tongue hangs out so far that I start tripping over it!

Oh well, at least in another month, more or less, the girls will be putting more clothes back on.

I don't mind people knowing I look. I do mind them seeing me slobber and drool.

John,

You have a fantastic collection there. Those karda near the top are enormous. I guess you found them on a couple of tiny kukries with high aspirations. :)
