Would someone please tell me what is Damascus. I have not run across a definition of it but see it advetised alot in the magazines. It appears "layered" and I think I've seen mentioned stainless and carbon. Thanks for a reply to what is probably well known by most.

Damascus is a city located in...
JUST KIDDING! "Damascus" is a term applied to pattern welded steel. Take 2 different kinds of steel, heat n' beat them together (different ways create different patterns) and then you finish the steel and put it in a nice acid bath to bring out the pattern.
Pretty stuff! It can be stainless or non-stainless.

This is an example of Damasteel powdered metal damascus in a stainless stainless configuration. Notice the wood grain effect caused by the alternating layers.
