I am thinking of splashing out on a more expensive folder .I am looking at the zero tolerance 0566 . but I have not heard of the steel .is it any good ? And what is it's characteristics .and would be nice to.have your thoughts on the knife .

You cant go wrong with Elmax or the 0566! I now have 6-7 ZTs in Elmax steel and it has always been great for me

Rcs - there are a lot of discussions on the steel, been around in knives for a few years. Search around and see what pops up. Too many threads to list, but there is good information there.

It will perform pretty similar to S30V with some added toughness

And a whole lot of corrosion resistance.

UDDEHOLM ELMAX (Data Sheet)
"Third generation powder metal technology. Noted for its fine carbide distribution with extremely low inclusion content for virtually no chip-out. An excellent balance between corrosion resistance and edge retention. Can be polished to an extremely high finish. Hardens and tempers to 57-59 HRC and 60-62 HRC with deep freeze. For maximum toughness, harden and temper to 57-59 HRC. For maximum wear resistance, harden and temper to 60-62 HRC."

Just get the 0566. Elmax is great and ZT has been working with it for years.

Edge retention is really good and corrosion resistance is top notch.

Don't own a knife in Elmax but from what I gather it has a lot of good things going for it in terms of characteristics. I wouldn't hesitate to own a knife in Elmax and in fact would consider it a very bit plus as I want to own a knife that has it.

There is a LOT of information on elmax on this website I suggest trying to read through some of it and make your own decision based on that. Fortunately for you it seems quite a bit of it from what I recall is also from the elmax in ZT's.

You won't be disappointed. ;)

Thanks for the information guys , I will hold my hands up .I didn't realise how much information was out there on Elmax and should have looked into it before I posted .it's the first time I have looked at zt and the first time I have come across that steel .:)

I have two blades in Elmax and like the steel very much. Look up Nathan the machinest here on the forum

I have actually made a leuku out of Elmax, and I have yet to find a steel I can get a sharper edge on...
That sh.. is getting to scalpel sharp in no time, pluss edge retention is really really awesome as well..

Yes, it is a very good steel. So good that many people ask for it by name.

ELMAX is a very good choice for a folding knife because it gives excellent edge retention, fantastic toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance, and yet it is not a nightmare to sharpen. Many people feel it is one of the best steels for a folding knife given its versatility and it's great performance across the board. Many people have noted that ELMAX seems to be the steel that S30V was claimed to be but never completely lived up to, which was excellent performance across the board with easy upkeep.

The 0566 is made as a slightly smaller, more compact, and slightly less-expensive option to the existing ZT Hinderer line. It's still plenty capable with great construction, a great blade, and a great steel, and it is a helluva good value. If you are looking for a folder you can carry every day and use for almost anything, it is an excellent choice.
