Is this simply black paint you find coating blades or something different. How durable is it or to put another way does it wear off quickly.

Epoxy powder coating is paint that, prior to cure, is a powder. The powder consists of epoxy resin, epoxy curative, and pigment. Typically it is applied by applying a charge to the powder and an opposite charge to the object to be painted, then spraying the powder onto the object to be painted. The powder-coated object is then baked. In the oven, the powder melts and forms a cohesive film, then cures.

The performance benefits of powder coating is that you typically get a more robust film than that formed from liquid paint.

Yeah, it's basically paint. Hard-baked. So it's more along the lines of parkerizing, but nowhere near as durable as some of the other coatings.

But hey, I hate coatings across the boards, so maybe I'm the wrong guy to ask.

Ceramics applied by vapor particle deposition make very durable coats. I use TiN, ZrN, TiAlN, and TDLC coated blades as finishing steels to sharpen other knives.
