What is INFI and what makes it special?

What is INFI steel and why is it better than say, o-1 or 0170-6C, or CPM S30V ? How do they compare?

What about the heat treatment, how does that affect INFI I've heard about some special Busse heat treatment?
 
INFI steel - .50 C, 8.5 Cr, .36 V, .95 Co, .74 Ni, 1.3 Mo, .11 N There are many myths about INFI but the composition isn't one of them !!!!

I have tested INFI steel and like its edge retention.

if you do a search I think you will find everything you need to find.
 
In addition to composition, IMO one of the big things INFI has going for it is the fact that Busse takes a lot of care with the products they put out. One of the few knife manufacturers I have nothing but praise for.
 
Call me lazy, but the only question I've ever had about INFI is if its stainless. Anyone know?

Yes it is. :p

Nitrogen is what is supposed to be the special ingredient that makes the big difference in INFI. Whatever the reasons might be, it is a very good steel.
 
Air Hardening Alloy with a high temperature tempering (900+ degrees), extremelly shock resistant (will bend/roll instead of chipping and after considerable amount of brutality), excellent edge holding capabilities and extremely strong. INFI is probably one of the best (if not the best) alloys for edged tools. It is basically the combination of all the mentioned attributes that makes it good. Some steels might hold an egde longer but cannot take the shock of INFI and vice versa. And as a bonus (a very nice one for me) the damned thing is basically stainless!

ITS ALIEN STEEL but don't tell anyone about that...
