What is involved in a hand rubbed finish

I've got a scratched and damaged blade that was originally bead blasted. Should I attempt to give it a hand-rubbed finish?
If yes, how? I have no power equipment available?
Thanks,
Davy

Davy,

You can get it reblasted. That may be the easiest way to go.

Doing a hand-rubbed finish on a beadblasted blade is possible but it will take quite a while to do depending on what grit was used to do the blasting.

Barry,
I have no idea what the grit of the blast was. But my question still stands: How to I try to get a hand-rubbed finish? I have no idea even how to start. What material do I rub with? What method of rubbing?
If it doesn't work I can always try to find someone to reblast it, but I'm thinking of trying anyway.
Thanks,
Davy

Davy,

I take wet or dry sandpaper, wrap it around an old file or wooden block and sand following the length of the blade. I start out using 100 grit and move up to 220, 320, 400. This depends on how fine you want the final finish to be. 220 gives a nice usable finish. Once you get to the grit that you want to stop at, take a fresh piece of sandpaper and make single pulls across the blade (moving the sandpaper a fraction of an inch to the side in between passes) until you achieve a smooth even finish.
Taking that bead blasted finish off the blade is not going to be easy. Prepare to use a lot of elbow grease.

I hope that this makes sense to you.

You can also use some Diesel #1 as a lubricant when you get to the higher numbered grits. It will be a little messier but the paper will last and cut longer and give a more uniform finish (old gunsmith trick for octagonal barrels). Don't know if you have access to hockey pucks where you are but if you cut one in half, sand it square it will make a great sanding block.

I've never truly understood the fascination for the game of hockey. You get a good fight going and you throw away gloves with steel reinforced thumbs and and a stick...silly! And then some guy with a horrible fashion sense and no weapons wants to throw himself in between you and the other guy (suicidal). As far as recipes go, I have a few but I'm going to sell them to the highest American bidder (they'll buy anything!)
