i like spyderco knives just fine. one of the first knife i got other than SAK was spyderco rescue which i used for my bagel knife. i keep noticing people are trading their more expensive knifes for spyderco para or mil. what is it about the knife that people want so much about?

I like the para's compression lock. Being a lefty I often check locking mechanisms as a right handed liner lock just doesn't work for me!

It's a good size, comfortable handle, smooth action, strong lock, it looks good and it's inexpensive.

I'm a big fan o' Spyderco and the Para/Military design completely embodies what I picture when I think of a Spyderco knife... it's pure Spyderco!

Works great, feels great, carries great, looks great (in my opinion anyway.) Try one and see for yourself!

If you are seeing what seem to be crazy trades or high prices, you may be seeing sprint runs exchanged.

Its a hell of a slicer, great edge geometry light for its size and the comp lock is awesome but as others ahve said you may be looking at sprint's. I think I paid a little over $300 for an s90v para2 but its 1 of 500 I believe, but the normals gan go about $100 and cut just as well just not as long:D I have several Para's b/c there a great edc knife

It's a Badass knife! Affordable, comfy for edc, great slicer, looks and feels awesome, unbelievably light. I am also a lefty and find the lock very easy to use. Opens easily and is rock solid. No complaints on the Para 2 here.

As others have said, you are probably noticing sprint or dealer exclusives being traded/sold. The fact that they are made in a limited quantity with different handle colors/materials (CF) and better blade steel (in some cases), increases the cost somewhat. Add to that the fact that it is THE perfect knife for edc for so many people, you have a perfect storm. You have, to some extent, the same phenomenon with the Military. I have owned a Para 2 for a while now and it really is a fantastic knife. I just got a Military and definitely see why it is also so poplular. For a big knife, it carries very well and has a lot of the same attributes make the para 2 so good. I recommend you pick one of each up. I saw a para 2 recently for under $100 and Military around $140ish brand new from some dealers (I saw one for $117.00). These are steals for the level of function you get. I would also like to add that the Gayle Bradley at $140 ish is also a steal but not only because it is so functional (it is) but also because it has great fit and finish, fantastic materials and one of the best blade steels available (CPM-M4). Here is a pic of all three for S's and G's:

It's fairly thin, I don't notice it in my pocket, it's sexy, flicks open quickly, closes one handed, excellent steel and blade shape, cuts great. I can't kick it out of my pocket. It almost makes me want to sell most of my other knives....almost.

I may not be popular for saying this, but it's one of the few Spydercos that look good. It has nice proportions where most others look a bit hump-backed or squatty or just plain wierd. It catches your eye in a good way, I think that's a fairly important reason why it's popular (though most people here wouldn't admit to buying one for this reason).

Of course it cuts well and has a good lock and all of that, but so do almost all other Spydercos.

It's a very good knife but also there is a lot of hype due to the recent sprint runs. A lot of the sprint runs sell on the used market for double what the original purchasers paid for them. It is up to the buyer to determine if the knife is really worth that or not. I bought a couple of the sprint runs and I can't say that they are fully worth what I paid, and I paid original prices for them, but I can't find anything wrong with them either and I paid a little more over the prices of the standard models in order to have a color and a steel that I liked better. There is not anything wrong with the standard models and they are now becoming more available at pretty good prices, for awhile they were in short supply.

Great question OP, i have to say I've found my self wondering this question more and more the longer im on this thread. My nearest knife shop is an hour away, i would go look at one today to answer this question, but i cant say im in the mood to drive, so maybe someone can help me. can you explain this compression lock to me?

There are several dozen threads here regarding the compression lock. It's definitely worth a search and read.
