What is it called and how do I make one ?

What is the part called that surronds the blade and ricasso directly in front of the guard. On most of the knives I have seen it on it is made of copper or brass. Is there a tutorial on how to make one?

Its called a habaki in Japanese.Jesus Hernandez has a tutorial and I believe there are a few others at Don Foggs Bladesmiths forums.
