and guns and flashlights and that sort of stuff?

I've got way more knives than I need. I still keep buying more.

Lost most of my flashlights in my divorce, so I'm starting to buy some of them again -- 4 in the last month, and I'm eying a couple other ones.

I've got several "adult" BB guns -- with scopes & accessories it's easy to spend $500-$1000 on them. Why do I need more than one? I've got a friend who has a zillion pistols.

What's up with this stuff? Why do we do it?

Because as men, we lack the unique and wonderful ability to give birth to new life. Seeing that this leaves us full of petty jealousy towards women, we proceed to waste money on tools of destruction and worthless gadgets that rob us of time that could be well spent communicating our feelings to others. I feel a group hug coming on...

Me, sarcastic??? never !!!

I don't understand why everyone is in denial about watches and other luxury accessories. The reason(this is my personal opinion)people think alligator is gaudy and gold is tacky is because they CAN'T afford it! Maybe quantity precedes quality in order of importance for these people. It is much easier to specialize in knives which are not that expensive and buy a lot of them. That is why people want to buy a lot of knives. Knives are cheap anyway compared to watches and other things of similar size(as a general rule). I think that is a reason a lot of people want to get a bunch of dorky gadgets; they once tried to buy expensive things but then resorted the the whole "tactical" look and persona because it was cheaper and they could always mock more expensive things that they cannot afford, or simply say "I think it is tacky." Yeah right, if you could afford it you wouldn't be saying that. This post was a bit off subject, but I am not getting any responses over in the community center, so I thought more eyes would read it here.

Bigbore,My wife and I used to work in the same shop and the boss used to give her both paychecks,so buying knives was out.Thats why I became a knifemaker,so I can have all the knives I want.Dave:D

Repeat after me. I do not have more of the things I love than I need. There, don't you feel better now.

He who possesses the most things when he dies wins.

Well Carl, I'm live in Louisiana, and nobody down here shows off stuff made from gator. Probably cause there's a chance that it used to be roadkill, or the skin used was just the leftovers from someone's sauce piquante. It's a matter of perspective, sometimes the expensive stuff really is crap, but the price tag overrides taste. I like cars about as much as knives, the Qvale Mangusta uses a Mustang engine/transmission/some interior bits, but is ugly as sin and has a name no one can pronounce, so the extra 40K is warranted. What's in a name, a rose by any other name will still wither and die.

Easy question to answer:p
Go to the closet.
Count the number of pairs of Shoes, or sweaters, or hats , or belts and on and on and on the other half has.

Then you will not need to even ask yourself
"Why am I buying more of this stuff?"

Because you can and it's fun to do!

KWM, LMAO :D God thats a great way to think. With that as a way of life, I can rationalize buying everything I love, lol

Simple,

we're gadget men who prefer small mechanical things as opposed to electronics and cars.

While I haven't got a fascination with flashlights, i've been a hardcore gun nut for several years now (particularly with service automatics), and a knife nut in the past 5 months.

I do this because I enjoy these hobbies and all that they entail - I don't question my enjoyment, I just do it.

Mike,
You have FAR MORE knives than I do. So I have a LOT of buying to do to catch up. No one is gonna give me a knife so I gotta buy and buy and buy and buy and buy and bye.......wolf:p

We desire these things because THEY don't want us to have them. The more secret and arcane and forbidden, the more I want them.

And I like tools because I like to fix or improve things.

Weakness, plain and simple. Just yesterday I decided I NEEDED a new 400cc head driver to perhaps lengthen my golfe game. Of course I left the pro shop with my new driver, AND a complete new set of irons, putter, bag, head-covers, and an umbrella. I came home, kissed the wife, and thanked her for the early X-mas present. Fortunately, she seems to have maintained her sense of humor over the years (26).

While I think everyone has a valid point, it will always vary from addict to addict...oops... I mean person to person. On our side though, is the SOLID FACT that when all is said and done, a lot 'o "frivolous (correct spelling?)" things we COULD purchase instead, will not perform or be as useful and versatile in everyday existence... AS A KNIFE!:D
Hi ho, Hi ho, it's off to work we go...

Maybe it is genetic?
After all knives are one of the oldest, most useful and most adaptable tools on the planet.

I think in my case it is that I really like things that work right, all the time. No questioning if they are gonna fail on ya. Just the other day, a friend stopped into a gun shop to get a holster for his USP, and told me they had a nice selection of Benchmade and Spydies. So, what did I do? I went by as well, and ended up walking out with a H&K USP .45 Compact. Was on sale, and I haggled down the price an additional 50 bucks, so I bought the darn thing. I DO NOT need another pistol. I have a hard time finding room in my gun safe right now as it stands. But, after messin around with the H&K, I didn't wanna put it down. Oh well.

There are certain stores I must avoid(Sears hardware dept being the most evil), if I wanna eat near the end of the week. Its not shopping either, its a desire. I pick something up and cannot imagine NOT having it to use. Women have shoes, men have tools.
