i doubt any other tool invented by man has brought forth as much love, hatred, devotion and talk as the knife.

feel free to toss in your own thoughts about the knife or your knife or why this tool is ingrained so deeply in our psyche.

if you have any links to writings by others please throw 'em in as well.

What else can give you more enjoyment, yet be as "simple" as a knife?
I doubt that anyone on the forums can answer that.

Sorry Bae.
You need at least 10 beers to equal the enjoyment of 1 knife.
I still think nobody can answer.

To maintain life, one needs:
1.) Food.
2.) Water.
3.) Air.

To enhance life, one desires:
1.) Fire
2.) Protection
3.) Tools to make the needs easier to obtain.

A knife(read:sharp edge), is responsible for filling two of the enhancements directly, and can be used to fill the other (fire). James Mattis pointed out a long time ago that knives predate fire in the eveolution of mankind. I believe, as a group, knife knuts are probably a bunch of fire bugs too. In it's rawest terms, I feel that to master and edged tool, is to master all you survey. I believe it's an incredible feeling of power to know that just by being able to place a sharpened edge on a piece of stone or steel, can allow you to not only survive, but do it in relative comfort compared to those that can't. Speaking only for myself, it's a very primal thing.

Oh, BTW, Beer rocks! :D

My favorite answer to this question was written by the late Jim Mattis. He said that the knife, in any form, was such an integral part of the early success of our species, that human evolution was profoundly intertwined with knife use. He posited that we evolved as a knife using species, and that the knife is an integral part of the human culture, in essence, that without knives, we are not human. I like that.
