What is it with thumbramps?

People seem to either love them or hate them. I mean just take a look at ml100's 'BK7 Bowieeeeeeeee' thread currently going on to see the response when Moose suggested grinding it off. I've seen comments in other threads such as, "Why would you need a thumbramp on something as big as a BK9?" and I've seen plenty of mod threads where it's just about the first thing to go.

Now I'm relatively new to all things pointy and don't get to play with my knives out in the open as much as most here, and I have to admit liking the feeling of the thumbramp on the knives I have with them (BK9 and BK10 from our favourite maker), so why the fascination with hacking them off at the first opportunity when the designer has obviously put it there for a reason? On the flip side, what is it about them that makes the mere notion of grinding them off lead people to threaten violence against the offender?

For a fighting knife I like the ramp, for a camp knife I do not. I like being able to stretch my thumb on the spine, and often find the ramp uncomfortable. But I also like choils on my camp knives which is another topic of love it or hate it.

The bk 10 and 7 in my opinion are more of a combat knife. It can be used for fighting but is also designed for camp chores, thus the design I believe. I could be wrong but that is my take on it.

I think it comes down to what you like and find comfortable. It's your knife make it your own!

Well, honestly, I don't need it and it gets in the way for me, in how I use my blades.

Now, the reason they are on there, is that they had to be there, for the BKT's to qualify for Government Service. Yeah, I know, but that's the story I got.

Threatening violence? Better not be in this forum, no sir. I can understand folks having different opinions on knives and modifications and what they like, or don't like, and they can feel free to voice them here, as often as they want, but simple fact is, I bought it, I'll do what I want with it. If I want to take this BK16 into my garage, put it in a vice and break it, I will, and though people can say what they want about it, it was still my decision to it.

The only BKT that I own that doesn't have the ramp ground off of it, is my BK7 and BK77. For me, it seems to fit that knife to a tee. Don't know why, but it does. All others are rampless, and will remain rampless. :D

Good post, brother Oz. Love that avatar.

ramp ramp ramp

a different kind of onion

also that thing they put on those knives.

think how much steel they have to waste grinding off all that other material. i figure leaving them on is true to the blade. i learn to use what i'm presented, or use something else... i almost never mod knives. seems... wrong. that's me though.

Why thank you Sir Moose. I shall shortly be hassling you for a BH number, this being my fifth BK&T thread started. :)

Denied. Posted in wrong thread.

BH# delayed for 3 months, check back then.

:D

I just dont care for the looks of them. Blade seems to flow better without one. Only thing that would stop me removing it would be fear of screwing it up due to my noob stage.

...I just realized I've been immortalized in a sig by the Moose! I dont know If I should feel giddy or scared LOL

It's all personal preference man. I couldn't care less what you do with your knife really. Not being a dick, just saying they're your knives, make 'em yours. I like my thumb ramps. Hell, I wanna get a couple more installed on the ol lady. I carried my BK10 all over Iraq and never really gave any thought to them being there and honestly still don't. I just like them.

I always liked the look of them and never felt like they were in the way. I can't imagine I'd take them off any of mine, but if you want to, I won't stop you. It's your tool, make it work for you.

I like the extra material in that spot! the ramp in my opinion will just make the blade a little stronger in that area where the grind starts and the handle ends. If you were to put the blade in a press and press down right in the center i would think it will moste likely break in that spot....oh wait!...it's a Becker! It will break the press!

FWIW I was just goofing around about the thumb ramps in the BK7 Bowieeeee thread. I like the ramps, and I like goofing on the guys that take them off as if they're performing some sort of sacriledge. It's all good.

Great, now I gotta go read this thread.

I always assumed it was an effort to kinda duplicate a certain knife maker's design out of the mid west.(Joke) I actually thought I'd end up grinding it off my BK7 but I've left it, I don't mind it.

I added the thumb ramps at the suggestion of Will Fennell....He was new products guy at Cammillus....Long time friend, committed knife knut, hunter and shooter extrordinaire.....They were all the rage at the time and after a few shots at getting the "teeth" as comfy as possible I decided that the form did not screw with function and agreed to putting them on.....I am still a bit ambivalent about them....But, they don't hurt nothin' and they make some people pretty happy......I just realized that this post is getting really ambivalent----- so maybe I should shut up and go to another thread or maybe go to bed......

All Best
