I found another knifemaker in my area and he claims to be an ABS Mastersmith. I was going to call him up and see if I could visit his shop. On his website, it says "Omimi". Do I need to know a secret handshake to understand this term?

Definitely visit him.

I won't spoil the surprise ... but this fellow is a genuine master. I've seen and held some of his work. Superb.:)

[BTW, "omimi" is Japanese slang for "big ear."]

Maybe I'm just reading something into your post but saying "he claims to be an ABS Ms," seems like you're questioning whether or not it's true. He is indeed an ABS Mastersmith and has been much longer than most.

Howard is one of the most metallurgically knowledgable bladesmiths ANYWHERE.

IF he has time for you to visit, you would be silly not to...but be prepared to be overwhelmed with knowledge.

If I lived as close to Howard, he wouldn't be able to chase me out of his shop with a stick...If he is willing to make time to talk to you, avail yourself of the opportunity, take lots of notes, and be a good student. You will learn a LOT.

Nick, I'm not doubting you that he is a true expert. I wasn't doubting that when the sheet metal company told me about him. Just saying, people can claim things, but don't always believe them until you can verify such a claim. More than one person here vouches for him, therefore I eagerly await calling on him.

While we're on the subject, ever heard of Jim Bartles? A slightly less reliable source told me big Jim was a master knifemaker.

Trust but verify.

Yes, I tried google yesterday. Did you know different states get different results?

I called and left a message. Hopefully he will call back.

Difference between being a "master knifemaker" and a sanctioned "ABS Master Smith".
One is a relative term and the other an actual Certificate on record.
I'm not sure if non-registered persons can view the list but there's a complete record of who is who here:

http://www.americanbladesmith.com/

Just click on "Bladesmiths".
