How do these compare to ATS-34, 154-CM, 440C, or 440-V? Are they better? I noticed Microtech uses them for the LCC. Do you think that's a step up or down from the 154-CM? Thanks guys :)

If Basic members were permitted to use the Search feature, you could check out a bunch of information on these steels. All I can tell you is that they are a step up.

Both S30V and S90V are Crucible stainless powdered metal steels. S30V is a generally a step up form 154C, particularly with regard to edge holding (about a 20% increase). S90V will hold an even longer, but is more difficult and expensive to work with than S30V, so it is not used as much.

There is a lot of details here:

I think S30V is easier to machine than CPM440V. Edge holding is similar to 440V, but slightly less.

Another point that is rarely considered is how easily, or how well, will it take an edge with typical sharpeners. To me this is just as important. That's why I consider these supersteels as compromises in many ways. It compromises ease of sharpening, in favour of edge holding.

That's why the old Japanese samurai swords made by craftsmen worked so well. The folded and forged steel had a harder steel on the outside for structural strength, and a softer steel in the core that would take a razor sharp edge. This is an oversimplifed view of it but that's essentially what made those swords strong and razor sharp.

Too bad the stamped steels of production knives don't have that kind of balance. I wonder if they ever will?
