What is 'Scary Sharp'?

I read posts all the time that describe their blade as scary sharp. I cannot ever recall being scared of sharpness. Dullness, maybe, as I could cut meself easier, but never sharp. Heck, I even use a (enter Psycho music for effect) RAZOR BLADE (Wee, Wee, Wee, Wee)! Why such a bizarre description? If you're scared of sharp stuff, might I suggest another hobby?

I think "scary" sharp doesn't exactly refer to the amount of fear emitted from the blade, but likely a metaphor, describing it's razor thinness.

and yeah, I know the sound was violins screeching. Wee Wee just looks funnier in print. Let in be (or should that be let it 'pee'?)

I would have to say that it's "scary sharp" to non-knife people! I suck at sharpening, but the regular (maybe sane, lol) people who use my knives are almost always surprised by how easily they cut through things like paper or cardboard.

To me its a blade that cuts with so little pressure that it surprises you. Like when you cut through a mailing envelope expecting only the first layer and cut through all layers and into the countertop. Like when you go to see if it shaves and you slice a layer skin with it. Like when incidental contact provides a deep slice instead of just a little thin line through the upper layer of skin. You get the idea.

I think the scary part is from being afraid to accidently brush it across your finger and see blood gush out.

(fade Psycho Wee, Wee, Wees)........

Lol

Occasionally after someone uses a knife of mine they mutter 'that's...sharp' and slowly hand it back to me (still open) without taking their eyes off it like it might suddenly make a snap at them. (Picture how one would handle a venomous snake)

Scary sharp has nothing to do with fear, it has more to do with the quality of sharpness. Near if not perfect.

IMO i think scary sharp starts at the point where a knife can cut something under its own weight... the flimsier the material, the scarier it is.... a knife that can cut a tomato by gravity alone is scary sharp... a piece of chiffon that falls on a blade and get cut is OMFGIJSMP sharp....
