What is similar in size to a Griptilian?

Hi All,
I have been lurking here for some time but have decided to join the forum and start posting. I am a newby to knives and have so far collected a Native, Buck 110 and most recently a 551 Griptilian based on suggestions found on this forum. I REALLY like the full size Grip. Can you suggest other model of similar size to the Grip? (blade=3.5in, closed=4.6in, overall=8in) Since I am new at this, I am open to try any quality knife makers and blade steels. Any suggestions for light duty knives around $100 and less would be appreciated. Thanks.

Spyderco Endura 4 is about the same size. But it's no light-duty knife. The D'Allara is also around that size.

Also, Kershaw comes highly recommended. Most of their designs are not my cup of tea, but they are still excellent knives! Check out the Kershaw Shallot, Groove, and Junkyard Dog (or JYD II).

I think a chocodile and half a snickers are about the same size.

Welcome to the forums. And say goodbye to your money and sanity. I love the full size Grips too.

And I actually bought a Spydie Stretch II in ZDP189 as a compliment to the Grip. The blade shape is very close on these 2 knives. The big difference is that the Stretch is thinner. Both are good cutters w/ the ZDP having an edge over the 154CM. The stretch is SOOO smooth to open. And the lock back is very secure. This is a great knife.

W/ ZDP the stretch will be more expensive, but you can get stretches in other steels too. Check them out.

Check out Bark River knives. They have a Huge selection of blades and handle materials. You can play with it (the web site) and see how the different handle materials look on different blades.

Spyderco Volpe, beautiful knife made in Italy (they know how to make beautiful things). Full Flat Grind 3.5" Blade, frame lock, SS handle with olive wood inserts. This knife is discontinued and sold at dealers for more, but now it is going around $65 on the bay.

Also Spyderco Endura starting around $50 for regular version, $70 for ZDP and $120 for upscale FFG/G10. Spyderco D'Allara Drop Point is very nice knife as well.

Another Griptilian? :D

Seriously, though, there are so many Griptilian models available that another, a different one, doesn't seem out of the question...;)

Ray :)

That is a very good point. Another Grip, such as a 'Ritter Grip' with a black S30V blade would be nice. So would a Buck 'Custom Shoppe' 110.

I'd highly recommend a Spyderco D'Allara Drop Point. I picked one up and it replaced my Grip as my favorite larger folder. In fact, I liked it so much that I picked up a second one when someone was selling them for $55 here on the forums (I think still available, see the for sale by dealer section, spyderco thread), after being discontinued.

Ergonomics are great, steel is VG-10, which is hard to beat, size is perfect, and I like the lock.

Personally, I haven't found much that can match it in that size range (the Endura is a great knife, don't get me wrong, but if I need something larger than my Spyderco Salt 1 (same size as Delica) I'd take a D'Allara any day over an Endura).

Thanks for the welcome and the great suggestions.

Is it bad that I have gone from wanting a simple pocket knife on the boat to cut fishing line, sandwich, etc.. to spending darn near all my free time reading this forum, checking out the classified ads, knife dealers, and searching Ebay for knife deals? :)

I will be doing research on the models suggested. Since I like the 551 Grip so much, I am leaning toward the Ritter, but do want to try some others with SS or G-10 handles, and that full flat grind sounds interesting. Since there is probably no such thing as a perfect knife, it looks like I will have to buy several and rotate them.

Thanks again and feel free to suggest others.

Make sure you look at the new Kershaw Shallot. Speedsafe with an ambidextrous flipper (I love that part) It' blade is 3.5 " slim design for pocket carry, good ergonomics, solid build. I have both and I like both, ...........A LOT!

Spyderco's Para-Military is about the size of a regular Grip and is a pretty sturdy knife. You should be able to find one for right around $100, maybe slightly more.

ya might check out a microtech mini SOCOM elite with the framelock, its a little larger than a std mini SOCOM and i have really liked mine, was my wifes favorite edc FWIW.

There's quite a few good folders for under $100 in that size. Some that come to mind:

Another B/M Grip, maybe a different color handle &/or blade shape.

Kershaw Blur, Groove, & Lahar. The Lahar might be slightly larger than mentioned, thought, but VG-10 flipper at a great price.

SOG X-Ray Vision & their new Visionary. I have a discontinued Night Vision (ATS-34 & G-10 scales), but the new ones have VG-10 & unfortunately zytel, but that's not much different than what B/M's using on the Grip's handle. SOG's arc-lock is just as good & smooth as B/M's axis-lock, IMHO.

Spyderco Endura 4s. While you might not find the G-10 version for under $100, you can get them with or w/o the wave feature, & in VG-10 or ZDP-189.

There's probably others, but those come to mind.

Good luck.
