What is so great about the Emerson CQC series?

I don't mean this in a derogatory way. They have to be great knives, but what makes them 1200-1600+$ knives? Thanks for the help/.

Low availability, high demand and the fact that there are a lot of people willing to pay the price.

These prices have come about because Emerson custom knives have become highly collectable.

They aren't $1,200 knives... they are $550 knives that some people are willing to pay $1,200 for. I'd love to have a CQC6 or 8 at Ernie's prices, but I refused to pay the outragously overinflated secondary market prices. I'll just have to wait until I attend a show Ernie does and enter the drawing and hope I get one. They are great knives, but not $1,200 great.

I'm not sure what is great about the Emerson customs because I have never held one in hand. I was lucky enough to get an order in for a left hand CQC-5 at an invoice price of $500. Maybe in about five years I will be able to have an informed opinion.:p

I don't understand either. Personally I hate Tanto Blade (No utility function what so ever)
But looks good in a glass case for display, I guess a lot of people love his work.

They are $550 folders with a bent towards self defence. People want them, and are willing to pay obscene prices for them. That makes them worth it.

I would like a CQC-6. I am not intrested in it for the current price.

Many other makers have comperable quality. I am sure that snody folders are excelet knives as well. They are not that available and I am sure that if an aftermarket starts the price will rise.

A Crawford KFF is just as much knife as a CQC-X. but it is not the same knife, and if someone wants a CQC emerson, that is what they want.

Is it a $1400 knife? only is you value it at that.

I have a damascus & pearl handled CQC6, it was about $2,400 & I thought it was a fair price. It would likely fetch more now. As a wise man (my father in law) once told me anything is only worth what someone else will pay for it.

Emerson's are a piece of knife history. They are well made, but of older design so from that point of view hard to compare to newer designs. Is it as nice as a Smith, Lightfoot, Carson, Terzuola or several others no. Do they have the wide recognition no, but Smith does for his damascus pieces which may be the best right now & Terzuola has developed a classic tactical knife in his ATCF series.

Would I carry an Emerson? NO! There are many better tactical folders to carry. Am I glad I have one - yes! My opinion on classic tacticals from well established makers (whose prices remain in this world) to carry & use...look at JW Smith's frame locks they are awesome, any of the Vanguard knives from Les Robertson or any knife from Lightfoot, Carson, Terzuola, Ralph, Mayo, RJ Martin, Tighe, Viele. There are others for sure, but I own each of the above & can speak for them.

My 1st recommendation is buy & carry a knife you feel good aboud, you like & feels right in your hand. Stay with good materials for a using knife - titanium & carbon fiber will last forever. For display knives anything goes, but keep them well oiled & humidity controlled.

I think a tanto point is very functional. I have carried several for a long time now and I have yet to have any problems.
Emerson's prices are in line with most other "tactical" knife makers. It is the secondary market that has the higher prices. People will pay what they think the knife is worth to them. I can not see spending money on some of the knives I have seen people buy. but that is their business. Why does everyone care what someone else spends their money on?
