What is stainless steel threaded pipe used for typically?

I found some stainless steel (I think, it looks that way at least) threaded pipe, 12 inch sections, 0.5 inch outside diameter, magnetic. The thread extends maybe 0.50-0.75 inches inside the pipe, on both ends. I found this in a Goodwill-type store really cheap, so I was curious what would be its original purpose?
