What is Stellite?

It's not fun to cut, drill OR grind!! But it finishes OOOOOOOOHH SOOOO NICE :D

A search here will provide TONS of information. As usuall, I will remain neutral on the Stellite-Steel-Talonite debate. They all have their strong points depending on application.

I can't WAIT to finish this one. Here is what a Stellite knife looks like, once 95% of the WORK is done:rolleyes:

NEIL,
Great blade & grinding - Stellite is really nice and makes great blades. You need to take a little trip to Hawaii & show our good friend over there how to drill his holes straight! :D :D :D

That is the most holes I've seen in anything other than from Tom & they are all straight & even!!!! You could get a reputation!!!! :p

Dman-

Stellite is a trade name of the manufacturer Deloro Stellite, and refers to a range of cobalt-based alloys. The alloys typically used in knife blades are known as "Cobalt 6" alloys, which contain over 50% cobalt, 25-30% chromium and a variety of other elements. Stellite is not steel, having only about 3% iron content. Here's a link to a recent thread with more info:

Richard,

Actually drilling the stuff isn't that bad. Center punching it is the hard part. I made a special carbide centerpuch. If you hit it TOO hard, it breaks, TOO soft and NO centerpunch mark :( About every 20 centerpunches, I have to sharpen it on my Diamond Wheel!!

Bill,

A trip to Hawaii would be fantastic for WHATEVER reason. I think we should BOTH go to visit the TNT Meister!!

Straight holes????????
huh??????
Give me a break.......the guy is a machinist....what do you expect??

:p

I have blades in Talonite and Stellite, and can't really tell the difference between them. They both seem to cut forever and don't rust... which is great if you use knives on the ocean.

And Mr. Mayo has been known to drill holes with the accuracy of a machinist....:)
