This may sound retarded coming from a a knife nut, but how did the term 'tactical folder' arise?

Sure a knife can look 'tactical' (eg. Benchmade, Spyderco, etc.). It can also not look tactical, but be used as a 'tactical' (eg. Buck 110, SAK, etc.). Is there any uniformity to the definition? Does it describe a knife's look or its use?

Thanks guys,

Mike

i would personally say its how you use it that defines it. just like it could be a tool or a weapon depending... heres the definition:

tactical:

Adjective
1. Of, relating to, or using tactics. 2. a. Of, relating to, used in, or involving military or naval operations that are smaller, closer to base, and of less long-term significance than strategic operations. b. Carried out in support of military or naval operations: tactical bombing. 3. Characterized by adroitness, ingenuity, or skill.
Other forms
tac'ti·cal·ly adv.

Now a days, its like "lite" and "low-carb", just another marketing gimmick. I wouldnt butter toast with some of the crap knife companies sell as "tactical" knives.

It's just a marketing term jumped upon by knife manufacturers.
I never liked the term. I see it as the same as the phrase "assault rifle" that the gun dealers and gun rags used that was then used against them by legislators. The term tactical has fallen off a little lately but not enough. It could backfire on knife industry at any time.
