WHat is the advantage of a Bali

So, I'm considering my options when it comes to carrying a good knife. Why should I carry a Bali? I mean, its really fun to flip it around and roll it between your fingers while you are sitting on the couch watching TV. However, what I really want to know is what is a bali good for that other knives aren't? How is it better?
Sincerely,
Jackfriend

Curiosity may have killed it, but I bet I can think of a few new ways to skin it.

Other than it beingthe coolest knife under heaven, the strongest folding lock, and a cool Kubotan + flail bludgeonig tool when closed, and hey great hit at parties.. liven the crowd, gain new friends, influence people, intimidate rivals..

plus!! our very own Clay made quite a comprehensive essay:
http://balisongxtreme.com/baliplanet2/tips/1-30-00.htm

check it out.. it's funn reading. and if anythign.. it 's gotta be thrilling to have a bad boiy knife in yoru pocket.. ofcourse if you're into that. most knife users wont touch it cause of the legalities.

Im basically repeating what Susan just said but in my own words...
Ive used my bali to strip wire, tighten nuts.
If you are confronted by somone with less experiance in knives, flipping out a bali can be quite menacing. Its the strongest locking folder. It looks cool, it folds and has a low profile. I can be used as a kabuton or loaded fist (like punching someone while holding a roll of quarters) The tang and butt are great for preassure point strikes. When half opened it can be used as a flail to smack somone with the free handle(this hurts A LOT) It developes hand eye co-ordination reflexes and dexterity. (My handwriting has actually gotten BETTER after using a bali) They are fun to customize. and im sure there is other stuff but i cant think of them right now

I have arthritis in my hands and the balisong is the easiest knife for me to open.
When it acts up. Also the three inch models are too short for me to comptfortably open. I have been without a good one since I let my 5" go in a trade.I am waiting for the new BM to be available to my favorite dealer. I consider them as well to be one of the stronger folders.

Cheers,

ts

Advantages of a balisong?

It's fun to play with, can be shown off to friends even if you don't have a really good one due to how different it is from other knives, often have more reach than folders, has a thinner blade that can get into spaces that folders or fixed blades often can't, and has a strong lock.

Disadvantages?
They require more room and effort to open than more traditional folder designs, a fan switch from a forward to reverse grip needs it to be latched closed, things like the Axis lock, Rolling lock, or a number of other newer locks are probably stronger than what often are cheap pivot pins, the handles are probably more prone to slippage than a folder that has a finger guard or textured grip, blade types are more limited (ie no hawkbills), can garner negative reactions, and serrations on one are a bad idea due to a higher chance of cutting yourself with one and the serrations leaving a slower healing wound.

There's not much a bali can do that a folder can't in terms of utility or defensive use aside from handle flails. Folders can be used as kubotans in their closed position just as much as balis can.

My suggestion? Carry more than one knife around. At least one plain edge folder or fixed blade, a serrated folder or fixed blade, and a bali for the thinner blade and to have fun with. If carrying that many knives isn't really an option, you can decide what option would work for you based on the pros and cons.

if you REALLY want to dissect the topic as such, there really is no need to list the advantages of a balisong versus a folder.. I mean I knwo I am not going to use my BM45 as a pair of pliers or anythign.

The friend who presented me with my carry balisong really doens't care for em and her brother thinks it is the stupidest thigns in the universe. (they are both sci fi fans.. I dunno if that has anythign to do with it

)

The issue was presented in the general forums and I was surprised to find many people who really do not liek it or think it is not worth it because of legalities. Or just think it butt ugly.

We can go on about many improvised uses of a balisong.. even the ability for it to be used as a make shift nuclear reactor key in case of a meltdown... but the fact of the matter is, it all boils down to the cool factor. Don't buy a balisong cause you can use it as pliers

if you do you are better off with a leatherman.

The one with the nice olive fork mind you.

Buy it cause it's cool it kicks ass and you kick ass too!

Djya get it?

I was also kinda surprised at how many people thought it was butt ugly. Ah well, less buyers for me to race to a store with. IMO they're the neatest knives next to autos (especially OTFs) but much more flashy and would carry one around if I had a decent sheath and a high quality one (which doesn't look like is happening for a while due to the BM 42 internet dealer issues and my Jaguars only seem to cut me well . . . ). Besides, I can legally own balis, unlike autos (at least that's what I'm guessing since Cheasapeake Knife & Tool has a few balis for sale). Of course, you're also talking to someone that carries 5 or 6 knives to parties and probably not the best person to ask what to carry for practicality

I love some of the reactions some of my friends get when they start to realize that I have at least 3 sharp, pointy things on me.

Yeah, you gotta love that!!

I get the same reaction with OTF's....

I'd post asking why we like them, not why you should. Its a preference thing, some people (us) like them, some can't stand them. What do you like? Thats what your purchasing power should go into. i like them for the "puzzle" asspect of learning new things. Its fun, and its utlility. Are you going to like it for those reasons? Beats me. Get what you want because its what you want, not because its the new hot toy on the market. if you go for the bali, let us know. Once you start, it gets hard to put it down...
