Many cultures have their own knife eg the Ghurkas with their Kurkri although that was based on a Greek sword. What knife is typically American or is it like Australia with its multi-cultural background that there is no knife that is typically Australian.

I beleive that it is the same as what race is American. There isnt one but all could be it. It seems that the US company's have taken many forein designs and made them into great knives incorporating them. Look at the balisong and karambit. Also I am not sure but I thought the Bowie was at first European?

Kabar, Randall No. 1; both arguably "Bowie" inspired but in more specific incarnation.

Kyui Su Kim:

The original knife designed by and made for Resin Bowie by a Mr. Black [ I believe ]and presented to his brother James is the first known example of what became known in the early 1800's in the Southeast US as "Bowie Knife"

The Europeans then copied it enmass and shipped them to the US for distribution to fur traders heading into the great divide west of the Mississippi.

in the eyes of an european guy, when you say american knife, the first that show up is the Buck 110! no doubt!

The Bowie knife, or the stockman, or the Buck 110. For me, it's the small Sebenza Classic. ;)

Cheers

Some days, I think it's a rusty, oversharpened 30 year old 2" stockman!

The bowie is showier and currently more popular, but my pick for the classic American knife is the Green River knife.

There was a past thread about this but I can´t find it, if I remember correctly, Bowie, Barlow, Stockman, and Boy Scout were among those mentioned.
