What is the Armorer's tool needed for?

I just got my first XM-18 today and while it was very smooth opening and closing, the pivot needed a tiny adjustment to make it easier to flip. I used my multitool's slotted screwdriver and backed off the pivot a hair and moved it back while observing centering and it is night and day different. So I started wondering, since you can move the pivot screw with a screwdriver, what exactly is the Armorer's tool needed for? I haven't disassembled the knife and don't have a reason to at this time since it is new. But is the tool needed to completely remove the pivot screw? Is the knife designed to allow for small adjustments to the pivot screw with a screwdriver, but removal of the entire screw requires the spanner?

It's simple. They are a conveniently portable system with the proper tools to disassemble and reassemble the XM. Will need different bits for 3" vs. 3.5&24.

Oh I thought it was including some kind of spanner to hold the pivot on the locking side while you turn the pivot screw. So I could use my multitool and the appropriate sized hex bits to disassemble? I am asking because for my Strider I had to use a spanner tool.

I had one xm that needed the spanner and one that didn't. I can take mine apart using a screwdriver and appropriately sized Allen wrench, no spanner required even with purple loctite on the pivot. The armorers tool is convenient as it has what you need in one small portable package.

I understand now. Thank you very much for the information. That would be really convenient to have on my keychain.

The Armorer's tool does allow for spanning, as well as the screwdriver portion that fits the slot on the pivot screw. It ships with a bit appropriate for handle screws on 3.5 & 24.

I went ahead and ordered one of the tools. Thank you for the fast responses. :)

I don't keychain mine, but do keep it close when away from toolboxes.

Thinking I might add a FDE DLC one to the Christmas list.

I needed one last night, so some quick work with a dremel took care of it :)

This topic has been covered time and time again.

If you are at home/work near an array of tools or are willing to just use whatever's available; then good on ya.

But, if you want to have a proper array of tools conveniently available in a portable package( that can go where most tool boxes/bags cannot...in your pocket), then the Armorer's tool might be a better option.

And as I may have mentioned before, you can hold the knife and the tool with one hand removing the need for a vice or a third hand.

Was my poor-man's version of the armorer's tool for quite a while. It worked so-so - a bit easier than using a bit-driver, screwdriver, or allen wrenches, but still not optimal. I slipped a couple times with it, not a pleasant feeling with a Ti or CF scale attached or with a SB or BB lockside. Plus, it doesn't ride all that nicely in the pocket.

The Hinderer tool fits, ha, like it's made for the XM ;)

And everything that everyone else has said :)

That's some nice work. I just got confirmation that the Armorer's tool was delivered. It is sitting on my doorstep. I'll check it out tonight. It looks like the investigator pen I ordered was delivered too.

you will dig the Armorers tool...It is much nicer once you have it in hand...even that little friggin tool is built to perfection! I have shown many people and say "screw that back together...you feel how nice that is?!" haha, Im a nerd. I hear ya N2K, wouldnt mind one for christmas either! :p
