I am looking for the best field sharpener. Two that I'm thinking about are the DMT diafold, and the Spyderco Double Stuff. Feel free to either recommend a different one, or give your opinion on the ones I'm considering:)

Thanks!

Jeff

Buy a Leatherman Wave. One side of its file is a diamond stone.

I like the DMT diafold....had a red one for years.....people always asking me to sharpen their knives....and they are usually dull...

so bought one with the medium and fine (red and blue) in one...I think they work great....

...very convenient, when you open it up, you have a handle to grab...and then I usually rest the end of the stone on my knee or a desk or something to help steady it up....

..portable...cary mine in a briefcase

I use the DMT bench stones at home...have ex. fine, fine and medium...those and a set of crock sticks and a leather strop do all my knives and keep em sharp....

My vote is for the DMT.........

I recently picked up an AG Russell field sharpener.
5"x2"x3/4" in size. It is a 'stick' system with 2 diamond and 2 ceramic rods, 4" long, set at 30 degrees. It's not small like a single stone but it does a very good job.

I like the red and blue diafold too. If you can, get a Spyderco double stuff to go along with it. I use my DMT for times when fast metal removal is needed, but the Spyderco ceramics do a great job of maintaining the edge if you don't let it get too dull. And I can get a finer, polished edge with the fine (white) ceramic that I can't get with even the fine grit DMT.

I asked this question about a year ago, and the DMT diafold was the most recommended piece of kit. For the field (camping, hiking, whatever) I think that a shaving sharp edge is unnecessary. So I like the idea of a coarse/fine or medium/fine folding diamond hone. You can touch up an edge quickly or repair a damaged one in the field quickly. I'm not sure whether or not a fine DMT stone puts on a shaving sharp edge, but it should be more than adequate for field sharpening. The DMTs look durable and light too. I should be getting a DMT in December.

Where can i get myself a double sided coarse/fine diafold??

Thanks!

Jeff

I really like the diafold, I have the red/green. Light and easy to carry, will make short work of any blade. And yes, it will put a shaving edge on a knife. I got mine when I was visiting my brother in TN and had to stop at Smoky Mountain. Most internet dealers carry them, as well as my favorite source, Knives Plus.

I just pulled a Spyderco Double stuff out of my tackle box. I put it there before I knew how to sharpen knives but just the other day I remembered I had it and pulled it out. it was super easy to bring back a knife that could definately not cut hair, back to shaving sharp with minimal effort. I was going to get a fine diamond rod for this task but the Double stuff works excellent and it's part of my daily carry now. I would highly recommend it

I have a Mission diamond rod sharpener. It works very well and is quite handy to carry. The rod unscrews from the round plastic holder which houses and protects it and you turn it around and screw it back in for sharpening. Very nice set up and also tube doubles as very sturdy "cigarette" holder. Ja Mon!:D

I have to agree with jayharley on this one. My eze-lap model m has served me for years. Since it is a round hone, it will sharpen all blades whether straight or curved. It also sharpens the large serrations on some blades but not the smaller teeth.

I've had the best results with a DMT Fine/X-Fine diamond sharpener together with Razor Edge Systems angle guide.

Check with www.ragweedforge.com.

Ragnar is the man there, and he carries a good variety of ez lap diamond plates that vary in size. Some are credit card size, and can be carried in your wallet, if space is a consideration. He has mesh sizes that run from x coarse to x fine. They are less expensive than DMT, and are great.

DMT Diafold (medium/fine) is hands down my favorite. In fact one rides in the front pocket of my Busse Basic #7 sheath. Next in line for me would be the EZ Lap medium diamond rod, the one that screws into the handle. It really does a pretty good job and its EZ to have around.
