Hi guys.

To me I judge a kitchen knife by how well to chops my onions. :foot: without messing the work place or finding onions on the other side of the kitchen

What is the best folder for onions. :D

Take the time to answer this silly question if you have experience :o

Best regards :)

Isis, hear my plea.

AG russel sells a folder called the HOCHO that is made to be a folding kitchen knife, but I think that I'd try one of Spyderco's salt models because they don't rust at all. :D

The Spyderco Catcherman is an excellent folding filet & vegetable knife - I've used one quite a bit for food prep on kayak camping trips and around the deer camp. The thin five inch blades slices and dices vegetable like a dream. I'm not sure if the catcherman is still in production but I still see them on ebay all the time.

An Opinel will carry out this task, the best i don't know, but the cheapest, i am pretty sure.;)

The folding filet knives work good for me. I even use them around the house. You just have to get used to working at the edge of the table.

My favorite is a Normark made by EKA that was really good. WalMart used to sell them for around $10, but unfortunately the last time I looked locally they had been replaced by a chinese knockoff Renegade brand for the same price. The Normarks can still be found with some effort; what appears to be the same blade with prettier wood handles can be found on some internet sites under the EKA brand name for about $30. I also have a Spyderco Catcherman; I find it more elegant but less effective than the Normark.

Oops. I see you are in England. Do WalMart & Normark exist there? Oh well, I am sure Spyderco & EKA do.

The AG Russel folding Hocho is very good. It's ATS-34, mine hasn't rusted after several years of camp and kitchen work.

I agree. Fit and finish could be better but cutting with the Russel Folding Hocho is a pleasure.

My best folder for kitchen use and chopping onions however is my Cuda Maxx Bowie. The 5.5" D2 blade takes a coarse edge which is very efficient for slicing. It's a framelock and therefore can be cleaned more easily than backlocks like the Hocho.

Dude, I thought you were talking about going after a Kershaw with another knife... Onions are MUCH easier to cut then Kershaw's Ken Onion knives, or so I'd assume... ;)

WOW!! That Ryback is a total Beast. I would like to see the person that uses that as their EDC.

One of the original Cold Steel large TwistMasters. Very wide, thin, flat ground blade. An excellent kitchen tool!

You would be hard pressed to find a folder that actually performs better on an onion than an Opinel.

If you want a more expensive answer, my mini-Ritter Grip also has an excellent blade grind for use on things like onions.

Just for grins I used my Endura 3 to chop up some onions, bell peppers and garlic. :D Worked just fine, but slower than using a regular chef knife.
