I see thread after thread asking...

What is the best knife for under $50?

What is the best knife for under $25?

What is the best knife for under $100?

Is there a way to start a thread asking about what the best value is in whatever range?

Also, many people seem to be "tactical, liner-lock" only types but many like slipjoints or straight locking folders.

What is the...

Best value under $10
slipjoints-locking folders...
liner locks...

Best value under $25
slipjoints-locking folders...
liner locks...

Best value under $60
slipjoints-locking folders...
liner locks...

Best value under $100
slipjoints-locking folders...
liner locks...

This seems to be a new twist on an often asked topic. The term "best" means something completely different to just about everyone. It can denote use, manufacture location, financial cost, warranty, Legality, ergonomics, materials, safe queen, etc. To get a better answer, you might consider adding some specific criteria such as blade length, origin of manufacture, custom, mid-tech, production, and so on.

Some people only collect custom knives that are usually in the several hundred dollar range, others collect only fixed blades that are custom ordered with various optional configurations, and yet others prefer specific materials such as Titanium framelocks.

Agree with Rev what's best for me may not suit you at all, what are you looking to do with the knife, what kinda steel do you prefer...etc....etc

Hmmm, good point.

This was actually meant to be kind of a consolidation of all the threads which pop up every week or so titled "What is the best knife for under $XXX?".

I think that usually what people are asking in these threads is value, or "bang for the buck".

In my case, it would be the best steel. I can see how others might put appearance, ergonomics, or many other things ahead of that.

I will ask it as "What is the best all around value (bang for the buck) at those prices?" Things like the Opinel or some of the Kershaws for under $20.

Say the person asking is a total noob and you just want them to get a good knife for the money and not buy a Winchester at that same cost.

Is that too general?
