What is the best Spyderco model under $110?

Very shortly, the easy answer will be the Matriarch. Endura handle and modified Civilian blade.

Right now, it is possible to get a Civilian (or Military) for under $110 from ultout.com . But that's rock-bottom pricing.

More realistically, I'd go with the full-sized Goddard or G-10 Harpy, depending on what style you'd like to employ. I like the wicked slashing of the hooked blades, but some are unwilling to give up the thrusting ability. If you go for the Goddard, I'd get the Micarta because I think with practice tip-down is faster to deploy, but the Liteweight offers a slightly better grip.

That's my armchair opinion.

I can't wait to compare the Civilian and the Matriarch to see which I prefer. Anticipation is part of the enjoyment I suppose. For me the Civilian is number 1, with no close contenders under $110 yet.

The total cost for the Civilian from Ultout.com should be just under or right at $110. That is rock bottom as Corduroy said.

The Harpy is a good slasher, and smaller as well as cheaper than the Civilian. Don't forget to check out the Merlin. It looks promising.

If your personal preference or training includes using both stabs and slashes, there are a other quality choices available from Spyderco. The Military is one of them. It fits into my idea of daily carry combination utility and self-defense knife (with heavy emphasis on utility). Your choice may depend on size of knife you prefer. I like mine a little larger, but Spyderco makes quality knives in all size ranges, so you've got a lot to pick from.

Hope you find one you like at the right price.

That's one more armchair opinion.

Don't forget the endura 98. fine knife for the money. I perfer the military, but it depends on where you get it, if you want one for under $110. I've never handled a Civilian, so I can't comment on it.
My $.02,

I would have to go with Endura (pre-'98) or Calypso (full size). If you want a knife to really beat up, I would go with the Endura. The Calypso is tough, too, but it is a more expensize and a pretty knife, so it doesn't beg for the abuse quite like an Endura does. If you want super sharpness beyond reason, go with the Calypso. Incredible blade on that!

I would have to go with my favorite: full size Tim Wegner. I carry it every day at work and at home. At work it rides in the front right pocket of my jeans. At home I'm usually wearing simple pull up shorts with a tie string at the top and it doesn't cause me any trouble. The blade shape is what I really like. It has enough belly to be able to do many farm utility tasks. I got the partially serrated edge and it has worked out around my five acres. Just a few days ago I was out mowing on the Deere and I got all tangled up in a giant wild rose. I stopped the tractor and just started chopping. Some of the canes were really big but those serrations would whip through them in one pull. I cut a few small branches off the overhanging cottonwood tree while I was stopped and it went right through those as well. Those flat G-10 scales stayed right in place in my hand. I can't imagine a much more useful general purpose knife.

I was just fixing to mention the Wegner as well. My first choice in a strictly self defense mode would be the Civilian, but overall, I think the Wegner is my favorite Spyderco. I love this knife. Big, useful blade. Great grips. Strong lockup. And if you saw one coming at you, I think you would be impressed with its deterent effect. Check one out.

Military, Military, Military....

Have yet to evaluate the Matriarch.

Police. Mine is plain edge, great for thrusting, the ss handle is large and in a reverse ice pick grip, could offer a great slash. The handle protrudes from your hand, even large hands and can be used to inflict trama and pain.
Certainly hope I never am forced to use it for defense purposes.

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?

My opinion would be the Military for both slashing and stabbing capabilities. But you said under $110. I don't think the Military comes under that. So, I would go with the lg Goddard, the lg Endura followed by the Police.

I would have to say the Wegner: I have both the large and the small. I have a tendancy to use the small more often since it just feels better in my hands: too bad they don't make the Wegner in left-hand
