what is the best steal for a combat knife. Just effectiveness in combat. Not sharpening or maintenance or anything like that thanks

For an individual such as yourself I'd recommend Dark Ops and Mantis, they utilize the best steels.

If you're looking for a steal, the Manix2 at 70.00 in CPM 154 is a steal.

I like 1095 about as well as anything. In the military, I used the Kabar and Ontario Marine knives.

I see your adamantium, and raise you unobtainium! Now that's ye olde steale!

It's amazing how many variations of Unobtainium there actually are.
I wonder if the few bars of CPM S150V are still sitting somewhere in the Crucible compound, or if they were melted down.:(
Either way, you'll never see a knife made of it.

Seriously though... sure, one can break the bank on supersteels, but in a combat scenario, you'd most likely be looking at it cutting cloth and (shudder) flesh and bone. As such pretty much any decent carbon steel would be tough enough. Less brittle stainless steels would probably be up to it as well. Steel hard, flesh soft.

there are other requirements for combat knives though-heaven forbid if you ever have to dig a trench with your knife... it has to be able to withstand the abuse of sideways pressure. Combat knives should be able to withstand the abuses of heavy utility use. I always carried at least 2, a utility knife and a fighting knife. The Benchmade Nimvarus is a sick fighting knife. The SOG Seal Pup, though made out of Aus8, makes a solid fighting knife. As CS Graves said, steel is hard, flesh is soft-if your fighting knife has a scalpel sharp edge that's what counts. My favorite alltime fighting knife though is my Ek #5.

your question is vague do you want this knife only to kill? for that steel doesn't matter, the knife doesn't even need to be sharp! :D only a pointy tip. for large knives if you got the money to spare id go with CPM M4 its still really tough at 63,64 HRC, and super wear resistant

If edge retention and heat treat is not a factor, then any steel can that be hardened will be good for fighting as the shape and grind affects how effective it is not the steel.
