I have a spool of US military trip wire in my kit for snares and things. I had heard that it was not the best material for snares, and I was wondering if there were any other suggestions for something better.

I've never tried it personally, but I've heard some kinds of piano wire work quite well. I usually use steel leader, the thinner the better.

I carry a roll of stainless picture hanging wire in all my gear and packs. I unravel what I need and burnish it straight. Easily found, used and replaced.

..there use to be loops of brass wire sold that was specifically labelled "snare wire".Soft, malleable,& strong enough for good snares. But picture wire is very good as well-and cheap too.

I use fishing steel cable with steel sleves...only thing being you need pilers. This allows me to chose breaking stregth of the cable
