What is the deal with Ontario RATs??

Different company. RC and Ontario are 2 different entities. There are some old threads on this, but my understanding is that Jeff and Mike went rogue and started working with Rowen Manufacturing instead of Ontario.

Just me talking here, but I think the RC knives are manufactured by Rowen to a higher standard.

Mike and Jeff didn't go rogue, Ontario did. That's why OKC snapped up the brains behind Ranger knives as a substitute line. I don't know the current status, but it was my hope that RC gets to shut down OKC's production of R.A.T. branded knives one day to end the market confusion.

The price differences are not that extreme anyway. For an extra 15 or 20 bucks you get the same knife (probably a little better) with a flawless warrantee.

It sounds better to say that Mike and Jeff went rogue. Leave my revisionist history alone. Haven't you heard of literary license? :p

In the past, there hs been some issues with some lots of Ontario knives with regards to hardening and the like.

It may just be my opinion (take it for what you may) but I personally think that the RC coatings are a level above the Ontario cotaings as well.

All that said, if it weren't for seeing ads for the Ontario knives, I wouldn't have come to like Jeff's designs so much (or even know about them)~

so far the only knife OKC makes that i even have any more is a RAT folder.... mainly cause there isnt one from RC.

Why do I see them selling for much cheaper?

It's like automobiles. Compare a high end model to a low end model. Both are decent rides that will give years of dependable service but the high ender is more refined and it just feels better.

Ontario RATs are decent enough knives, I love my TAks. But the quality of the heat treatment, is a notch of two below that of the RC line by Rowen. I pretty much use my RAT-3 and RC-3 interchangeably... until I am going to be away from home, then it is the RC simply because I trust the quality of it more.
