what is the difference between Rat and Ontario Rat?

RAT originally contracted with Ontario to make their knife designs, then went independent. There was some friction at the breakup. Now they have better control over quality, and bringing new designs on line.

RAT Cutlery covers the warranty on the RC series, Ontario is responsible for the R's.

ok so this forum is for the Rat knives not the R side then? how good/bad are the R knives? i just ordered a Rat7 with D2 steel, i heard alot of good things about that steel but i didnt buy a spyderco millie in time so i thought i would try one of these. am i now on the dark side that your sig mentions, if so where are the cookies? :)

Both companies make a good product. Nuff said. BTW: we have no association with Spyderco.

This forum is for RAT, not Ontario. The Ontario knives are still good, but discussion about them should go in the General Knife Discussion.

If you have really come over to the Dark Side ... you know how to get your own Cookies.

I think some of the confusion also comes about from what "RAT" really is. RAT is a training group that teaches survival, both jungle survival and domestic courses. All the knives commonly called "RAT" whether they are from Ontario or from Rowen Manufacturing (who makes RAT Cutlery), were designed and came from RAT's work in the field. So, we are associated with Ontario via the Ontario RAT line that we designed, and we also build our own line called RAT Cutlery. The RAT Cutlery line has an RC designation before the knife length, such as RC-3, RC-4, RC-5, etc. or either it is branded by the ESEE logo (crossed knives and skull). No knife in the RAT Cutlery line has "RAT" in its name. That is only the company name. If you buy a knife named RAT-3, RAT-7, TAK or RTAK then that is an Ontario knife. If you buy an RC knife you are buying a RAT Cutlery knife.

ok, this will be the last post on here about Ontario Rat, i don't want to bring up any sore subjects. i know there is no association between you and spyderco, i was referring more to the d2 steel. Spydercc had a limited run of in their military folder and i didnt get one to try out the steel.
i guess this means this wont be my last Rat since i now need a Rat RC knife:).
thank you for the answers

edit: the rat pack (until it is renamed) looks like a really good start, it looks i came to this forum at just the right time. sorry if this thread brought back up any hard feelings.

No hard feelings. We do understand why there is confusion out there still. And asking never hurt anything so ask away. Mike

All the other stuff aside, you guys did a nice job on the RAT-7/RC-6 designs.

I still use my older R.A.T. knives from Ontario, and they have been very good performers. I think the newer "RC" models are a bit nicer in fit and finish, but functionally, I can't tell any difference. The RAT-7 and RC-6 are really the same design except the RC-6 is just a half inch shorter.

All of the Ontario RAT designs are nice knives and there are still quite a few of them sold and a lot of them in user's hands.

333: no problem on asking questions, as Mike stated. There are no hard feelings from us towards anyone in this industry. We just didn't want this thread turning into a RC vs Ontario thread. The same as we don't want any thread turning into an RC vs (insert any manufacturer here).
