i am new to the forum and if this has been answered prev. please forgive me. but i hear all different saying in heat treat and that tops has a diff heat treat and just made me think what makes it better. so where better to ask than here. any help would be greatly appreciated thanx

There are two kinds of heat treat. Right and wrong.

The right heat treat insures a knife can make the most of its geometry for its intended use.

The wrong heat treat will be either to hard(break/chip) or to soft(roll/lose edge)and cause the blade not to be able to use its design to perform its designed task.

There is no magic heat treat. It can be explained better I am sure but that is the jest of it.

There is a lot more difference in performance due to different blade geometries than there is due to different heat treats. When listening to some of the posters, sometimes the information offered is best taken with a grain of salt.

FWIW, Beckers and Tops knives don't use the same alloys. That alone, will require the use of a different heat treat schedule.
Tops uses 1095, a straight carbon steel.
The Beckers are made by KaBar. KaBar uses 1095CroVan, an alloy steel with somewhat better properties than straight 1095, all other things being equal.

I've never tried a Tops, but I have a KaBar in 1095 CroVan and have no complaints about either the heat treat or alloy.

Well the reason I ask is I have heard the the tops have a differential heat treat. And was wondering how that differed from the beckers
