Just wondering.... Who came with the idea of carrying knife on his neck?? What is the story of modern neck knives?? Any info (or link to another source) will be appreciated.

Thank you.

There are paintings about 100-200 years old which depict aboriginal Americans (or whatever the PC term is these days) wearing neck knives. These appear to be large pouch-type sheathes which covered most of the (scalping?) knife. I suspect that the practice goes way back.

For whatever its worth, Kipling refers to Mowgli wearing his knife around his neck. I believe "The Jungle Book" was written in the 1890s sometime.

Of course, even earlier, there was the guillotine...but perhaps that's a different genre altogether.

And centuries before the guillotine was the headsman's axe. Millenia before that was the Chinese headsman's sword.

The Tibetans have carried a neck knife called a "Thee" IIRC for probably several hundred years.

But I have another question.

What was the first production neck knife on the market? What company made it? Does anybody know?

Didn't the "Mountain men" wear a neck knife to cut patch material when loading their muzzel loaders?
