What is the most prized steel used today in knife production regardless of cost? Why? What are its properties? I am talking about medium to large size, fixed blades for outdoor/hunting/military applications.

Hi, TW.
You asked this question on another forum and I gave an absolutely brilliant response in favor of L-6 and BG-42, but now I can't remember where I put it.
I think they refer to this as the second sign of old age.
Fortunately, I remembered what I wrote, and I enjoyed it very much, thank you.

I don't know. What day of the week is it?

I'm just kidding of course but the answer is not at all simple. When I have a customer ask the same question I ask them what they are using the knife for and what they expect out of it.

Once you can answer these questions a knowledgable knifemaker will be able to suggest a quality steel regardless of the price.

The two extremely high performance steels that I would probably recommend today are BG42 or Stellite depending on the intended use.

i'd have to most steels in the CUSTOM knifemaking industry are all good. it's different for swords. it really depends on if you need corrosion resistance and edge holding ability. there is list of questions i usually go through, but i forget them right now. that can't be a sign of old age in me, more a sign of "long day".
