What is the M1911 of knives?

Designs that have stood the test of time and earned legendary status, yet still kick butt in the modern era. I vote the USMC combat.
 
Buck 110. Still one of the best folders around.
 
I also believe Garageboy is correct -- USMC by Camillus or Ka-Bar.

I equate the Buck 110 more with something non-military, like a Remington 870 maybe.

Me too, it's been an American icon much longer than the Buck 110. If we add a folder class to this question, I would vote the 110 for that.
 
Actually I think that's a good point with the Marble's Ideal--it's where the Ka-bar got its design from.
 
basic clip point bowie. Still being made in some form by most companies. A staple for the custom maker. Still influencing designs off all types of knives, folder to fixed blade.
 
Many articles have been written about American Hunting Knives and the "Ideal" is always at the forefront of discussion. Took an aussie to bring it to your attention.
