I` ve found old hatchet ,I left on addict some 15 years ago,so I cleaned it,and have noticed stamp on the head BM DIN5131.DIN is obviously Deutsches Institut für Normung, but what that tells me about hatchet quality?

Sorry no help here...Take it out and abuse it see how it holds up ....

As you noticed DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung.
It is German organism in charge of norms.

It means that the axe has to fullfil various requirements to meet the norm. I have no idea what those are but they are probably quite basic.

Edit:

Here it is:
"Timber handles for sledge hammers up to 2 kg"
http://www.nhm.din.de/cmd?artid=160...ailansicht&committeeid=54738931&languageid=en

Makes sense to me, unfortunatly you'd have to pay for more details.

Yes,and 5131 is standard for hatchets, just have found it,thanks for link.I wouldn't pay for publication in German language, that I cant speak,so I`ll just go for the woods and try it.After cleaned and rehandled, next to Rifleman`s Hawk just to have picture of size.
