I really like my Opinels, but I was wondering if there was any type of Fixed blade knife with similar qualities.

If your looking for thin carbon steel blades that cut well and low prices, I'd say Frosts or Mora of Sweden. They make Pukkos and stuff.

Hi John...I am not familiar with the qualities of Opinels...would you expand/expound on them a little more?

check out the Mora blades....they are made by Ericsson (my fave) or Frosts of Sweden. They average about 8 bucks for as good a knife as you'll ever use...

Moras, again! The do have ugly plastic sheaths, but they cut like nobodys business, and the price is certainly right! :)

Go to CUTLERY TO GO and click on american knives ,then scroll down to COOLDSTEEL KNIVES you will find TWISTMASTER knives . BIG HEAVY STURDY BUILT TO LAST ive got the smaller of the two showen. ;) designed the same way as OPENIL with a twist coller locking ring ,blade is much thicker and is high carbin I LIKE MINE! :p

You can buy blade blanks which are essentially Opinels in profile, you just fit a handle on them and off you go.

Take an Opinel in the opened position. Buy some JB Weld epoxy. Pour it into the channel of the handle, the lock, and all around the hinge of the blade. Let dry. There you go. :D

Another vote for the Moras if you want to forego the above.

Sharp idea :D

I agree with the vote for the Mora knives.

Here's Frost of Sweden (not to be confused with Frost Cutlery "importers") page on Mora knives -

http://www.frosts.se/moraknivar_main.html

The top 2/3 of the page has plastic handled cheap knives some with NON-traditional guards - the last 1/3 of the page are the more traditional red wood handled Moras.

KJ Eriksson are also well known makers of Moras

Unfortunatly the KJ Eriksson site is only in swedish, but Ragweedforge has some Eriksson knives -

Kellam has an S line that is like the moras-12 bucks maybe? but you get a stainless or carbon option.--Joe

If you mean most "Quality for the cost": Mora, or Condor. Old hickory is also up there if you don't mind sharpening and finishing it properly.

If you mean cutting ability, as in the thin razor that the Opinel is: Opinel paring knife

Absolutely Mora. R Murphy's hunting/fishing line is out of the US, made with 1095 high carbon, and retail around 20 bucks. Full convex grinds with a flat microbevel. Great heat treat, so so F&F, 5 minutes with some sandpaper and some carnuba wax will turn them into a 100 dollar belt knife. Kellam sells Roselli knives I believe, which are blades similar to Moras with molded plastic handles. There is also Hultafors, which makes a similar Mora-type blade in varying thicknesses and handle designs. Cold Steel's cheap 4116 Krupp knives are great blades for 10 dollars, too. The Finn Bear and Roach Belly are great slicers-easy to sharpen, hold a decent edge and are comfy users, albiet somewhat ugly.

Opinel does make a carbon steel bladed paring knife which is quite dandy! and very affordable.
