for this hammer? It's a great tool I use constantly to straighten blades. Just place it on the blade, and tap it with a hammer, in a running down the blade method. Works like a charm, just don't know what to call it, other than a flattening hammer.

You were only close to being half right, as it is not a hammer. It is a FLATTER TOOL.....or just FLATTER.
It is placed on the sheet metal and struck by a maul.

I call it an "ickyickyptangneewollah", but people look at me weird when I do. :D

Or a flatter. That works too.

Right.
Fast way to annoy a blacksmith: call a top tool a hammer, or even worse, hit something with it.
(top tool is anything that rests on the work piece and gets struck by a hammer)

Faster way: hit his anvil w/ it.

Fastest way: hit him with it.

Or scream I AM THOR! and proceed to crushing cinder blocks with it. :D
Not a good idea, he'll call the nice men in white coats to take you away, and you'll have to wear the jacket with the long sleeves that make you hug yourself.

On topic: That's definitely a flatter. Good for lots of flattening type jobs ;)

Yup, with four (now grown) sons and all their friends, I've seen it all in my shop. :)
And having to explain that "My grand daddy was a blacksmith" is like saying nowadays "My dad did some carpentry around the house."
