What is the reason for PREPRODUCTION knives?

The reason I am asking is that I had the Preproduction BM 905 and it looked exactly the same as the production one. Except for the print on the blade. I would understand if the series was somehow limited in produced number of knives.... but it looks like it is not (at least the number is quite high for the knife become a collector item).

Can someone explain that??

Thanks.

Like all mechanical devices, it costs a lot to 'tool up' for a project. The factory probably makes a limited number of knives for testing, or getting info back from the tool room. Then the knives are sent to magazines and large distributors. (The first magazine article I saw on the BM Stryker showed a photo with the word 'prototype' stamped on the blade. My guess is that many designs create 'no buzz' and get dropped from a manufacturing schedule.--OKG
