What is the record??

What is the record for numbers of pieces in an HI collection?? Is there a pic of it? Is an undying hunger for images of khuks a sign of HIKV??!

I have no idea, but I bet that it is well over 100. I couldn't image that many. I have well over 40 with another 10 or so that have been gifted to others. My collection fills a trunk, and several of those pieces won't fit.

I have four and I bought my wife one of the wee little Kagas Katnes. She loves anything miniature and "cute" like that.

Soon I will have five of them, as I have been talking to Ms Yangdu over email about what I would consider the "ultimate" khukuri (for me, anyway), and yes, it is a modified form of my favorite style of khukuri... the Chitlangi.

Just checked my email about 15 minutes ago and she said they can indeed do it. I had no doubt the highly skilled crew in Nepal could make it. I inquired if Kami Sher could do it but he is currently in India. The kamis are astounding craftsmen and I'm positive whoever makes it will do a great job.

"Wolf's Battle Chitlangi", coming soon.

The way I have been buying HI products lately, I'm beginning to creep to that magic (insanity) number. Just fun blade to have and a real value for the price to boot.

I had 60 at one point in time. Sold some durring hard times and have since bought more to replace them.

and you guys will be posting no photos....:D

There is a picture of my collection Uncle Bill posted back in 2000 or 2001 I think....or was it 2002? I think I had around 40 at that time. I will try to get a new picture up soon.

You win! That rocks:thumbup:

Wow--quite the collection! Is that, what, 145 knives? Let's see--at an average of, let's say $65 apiece, that's $9425 worth of H.I. steel.

Well, he's getting close! :D But, a little while yet. :p

Some nice older models I don't have there, like the Museum replica and the Ghopte. I've been forced to sell off many of my dupes, down from several of some models to just 1 or 2, as well as some blades that didn't do much for me (the Reti, and some smaller AK's and sirupates.) Very nice collection!

I would have guessed lcs37, then Norm... :p

I'm pleased/completely crazy to have hit 11 swords, counting 5 25" khuks.

mmm, i have at least 35 khukri types and variants; that's by name. of those, i have at least 1 of each, and in many cases, more. for instance: at least 5 size/weight ranges of foxy folly. i don't have the most current variation of the smaller foxy with the companion knife. working on it :>

in some cases i have enough, that i'm putting together a trade list (i want to trade and not sell), please see rammy or the trading forum for that later - definitely wanting a munk cleaver :)

pictures. if you search for jaiofspam's posts in the last year or two, his pictures tell a tale of HIKV. so do many others. you have but to search back on the history of this forum a little.

still, this should amuse y'all:

i need to wait until the light outdoors is good again, and so on, and use a better camera and make a whole group of collection shots. since these last two group shots in particular, a lot of HIKV occurred, and i have many more.

Nice shots Joe! You have some real beauties there. Like me, you don't seem to be attracted to the models in the 10-13" range. :D

I think some folks dance around the issue because they don't want to be seen as laying it on thick or something, but I'm glad to see that attitude passing. That's certainly not my intent, nor I know the intent of others who take the time to share. I very rarely post pics, but still love all the different models HI has come up with, and for a while tried to get at least one of each, which is impossible of course.

After 4+ years I'll make a try at a progress report ;): The way I see it is that I simply chose to support something I loved, which was HI specifically and this forum generally, and for a short while had the wherewithal to get away with it, choosing to cut deep corners in other areas to afford this.

I was fortunate enough to get in on some great deals in the last 15 months or so before Uncle Bill passed. I was able to obtain a beautiful brass / engraved 27" Royal Banspati and very clean 18th Century from Yvsa, that are really nice. I was so fortunate that Yvsa took me under his wing so to speak, and gave me great info about the "old" forum and the knives offered, plus lots of extraneous and helpful input. That, plus many productive hours reading all the old posts, with Bill posting a dozen times a day, and passing along great info really helped me get a picture of HI as it was before I arrived in 12/03.

For the longer blades, I have a 25" Father AK, 26.5" CAK, a 30" siru, a 26" and 30" Kobra, and 25" models for the Kobra, Sirupati, Chitlangi, Chit Villager, Malla, Gelbu Special, BAS (23"), and Ganga Ram (25 & 25.5") round out the bigger stuff. (Uncle Bill gave me the option of getting the first 25" Chitlangi and Malla's in horn or wood, and not being sure of how horn would hold up long term, chose the wood ones for each. Wish I had also opted for the horn malla, as Kumar just rocked on those 4 blades! BTW, Mike, (Ad Astra) ended up with that beauty. That first 25" horn chit went to a fellow buying one of his first kukris I believe, and then he sold it off shortly thereafter, so its pretty much vanished.

I won a gorgeous 10" Kobra from Steve, that has an incredible tru-oil finish that I will never part with, as well as a great 14" horn BDC that he sharpened that I got for my son, also won in a raffle for Ram. Yangdu blessed me with the first 16.5" D-handle, which I value very much.

Danny got me the original Rod Allen Hanshee, which is a very fine piece of work, and I was fortunate enough to get Sgt. Khadkas largest Samsher, a 20" 40 oz. monster on a DOTD from Bill. Bura made a great 18" WWII with chainpuri handle which is one of my best models. I have the 3 original Foxy Folly prototypes, and a first run FF at 21" and 49 oz. that I got from Spiral. Also somehow snagged a 16" 30 oz. FF/Dui Chirra, that looks exactly! like the one the Gurkha is holding edge up on the HI web site. Dick gave me his Bob White Bolo with Fiddleback frog, and a wonderful Parang with flame chandan.

I was able to get a set of three Shop 1 AK's, all engraved with elephant, bando boar and tiger (I missed the dragon) from a great guy here on BF, who also got me my pride and joy, which is a 19" 33 oz. Gelbu with carved rosewood handle (pic attached.) Sorry, I've posted pics of it before, but it's really pretty.

And I have five great YCS's, including a beautiful monster one in Osage Orange that I got from Nasty, and a special order 21" one with 6"+ handle that balances like a dream for such a big blade.

I missed out on all the old special swords, like the saber, and some of the older HI sword models like Steve has posted pics of, but I have a nice selection of the newer ones, and did get an old HI Everest Katana on BF. Mamav (Gin) kindly thought of me when she parted with her Bura 2-and-a-half-handed katana that she and her beautiful daughter Karen showed us at the SWKK, held at her home in Mesa. It is sitting next to me on a tachi stand that Jerry Mings crafted.

I guess I've sold probably 50 items in the past two years, including both Napoleon swords, the one metal scabbard one which was destroyed by the Canadian PO, and I'm still trying to get the last $40 back for Ross up in Canada. I sold both the 18" AK's that I had, as for some reason they didn't balance that well for me, and got a Shop 1 thick spine behemoth replacement from Jimmy. I also sold all the 12" AK's and Sirus, as I just didn't care for the way they handled or fit my hand or something. I got rid of my 15" pens, a reti, several nice KK's and Sarges, two 12" pens, kobras and some GR's, an extra 18" tin chirra, two 18-19" chainpuris, a kerambit, a horn UBE, a BAS, 2 Bura hanshees, a 30" siru, my pretty "extra" Hanumans and Garuds, etc., etc. Some of the proceeds went into buying a set of Salyans, when those were being produced, as well as some Katunjes, but most just had to be sold because it was getting to be too much.

After all that the collection is down to about 225 HI and another 40 from Tora, NKH, KH, Blackjack, BK&T and custom one-offs. My best of those is one of the "3 Sisters", a matching set that Petr Dohnal in the Czech Republic made for Dick, Aardvark and myself. Ryan has Dick's now, Sister #1.

Some of the NKH was a huge disappointment, while several are the equal or better than anything I've seen. Most of the KH is good solid stuff, if somewhat plain at times. One dud only. All the Tora is excellent, with the bulk of them leaning towards fighting blades, rather than heavier choppers (I know they make some good choppers, I just don't have any.)

Obviously, all that was beyond a little overboard, and in the past 8 months I've bought just 4 knives as my priorities had to change, or an average of one every other month, which is much more sane, just not as much fun. ;)

I hope that even though I rarely add anything to the collection anymore, that I'll be able to get in line to snag relevant new models as they are produced by HI.

Joining this forum was one of the more significant life-changing things that has happened to me, and the forum and the people I've interacted with made the collecting very fun, and the whole experience really meaningful to me. It has not been about just acquiring "things", believe me.

I've interacted with dozens of forumites and met some great people here. All you have to do is look through the names above to see that!

P.S. Here's the pics of my favorite HI mentioned previously, with a closeup of the handle carving:

They are brothers. :p The 25" horn Malla is yours if ever I sell it.

;) Me, too. After a while khukuries have nothing to do with anything; like mandalas they're just a kind of goodwill/personal betterment focus point.

As an artist doesn't see brush or canvas (or mouse and computer) but rather sees through them transparently to the art, so too do khukuries disappear.

Zen thought for the day.

Wait. If they disappear, why do I have about 60 of them?
