Moved to gadgets and gear before stretchy knives show up in the thread. :D

I wish I had the stretchy/liquid knife/sword/axe/hand that the liquid metal bad guy had in terminator 2. That was awesome. Talk about a stretchy knife.

Spider silk is the most resilient, ie. it can take a lot of energy before being permanantly stretched and not returning to its original position. Spider silk might have a large amount of elastic deformation, maybe the most, I'm not sure, however something like silicone or other elastomers should have a lot too.

Typical rubber band is maybe 50/1000 of an inch in diameter. A single strand of spider silk is less than 1/1000th of an inch in diameter. If you could make a piece of spider silk 50/1000th in diameter, it would be amazing.

Scientists recently isolated the genes from spider DNA that define the fluid that becomes the silk. They've spliced it into bacteria and now the bacteria produce this wonderful fluid in large quantities. Some scientists are now working to figure out how to properly extrude the stuff to make strands which might be woven into threads and ropes and even into cloth. Others are trying to figure out how it gets its amazing properties.

I read somewhere they used to use spider silk in WWI for big gun crosshairs because it was the only thing they had at the time that was thin and strong/ elastic enough to withstand the recoil.

I dont know if thats true, I found a few things on the Internet implying it might be...

Cheap pantyhose that hit the frigging ground after a day of use with a skirt. LEGS brand for me anymore! Doh! LEGS brand IS good and stretchy waist band that stays up. Your welcomed.

Silly putty is super stretchy. Is there such thing as synthetic spider silk? I heard they were planning on making flak jackets out of it but it was too stretchy. Nylon pantyhose are very stretchy.

If they do get the stretchiest spider silk, how will they make it? Are they going to weave it or what? I saw a really stretchy rubber band last night. It was on the mans wrist, he took it off and stretched it a whole armspan. To give you an idea, thats almost 5 feet(for that guy).

First you get a really, REALLY big spider

Actually, it'd probably be the same way they make nylon or something like that; mix up a batch, keep it liquid (heat or with chemicals) and then extrude it into shape and it cools or whatever into a solid form.

I think skin! I remember years ago as a child, reading in the Bible, that Moses tied his Ass to a tree and walked 10 miles.............Pretty hard to beat that for stretch.;)

J/K, J/K. All you born agains relax now.

I was thinking Stretch Armstrong or the guy from Fantastic Four. Given the original post's author's name, I figured this was a superhero question...
