You know, why they never need sharpening. What are they made out of? Or are the TV advertisements full of it...

They're partially full of it.

Of course they need sharpening just like any other knife but they still continue to sort of cut (actually rip) when they're dull because of the serrations.

I'd bet that they really start to suck at any kind of push cutting / chopping when they get dull though.

Oh, so that is the secret!

My dad told me his old shop teacher used to keep a set in the tool cabinet, and one day mu uncle used one to chop just enough material off a stool leg so that it would always wobble.

And concerning the last post in the thread Cougar Allen posted, that reminds me of our recent trip to Las Vegas...those gondolas in the Venice canals have electric motors. Boy did those guys get pissed when we reminded them how easy it was to push a boat around when the motor is doing all the work...

thanks for the replies

People laugh at these blades (me too) and I wouldn't want a set of 104 like Chef Tony, but I have found them to be pretty handy.

I got a set of them on a lark. They're pretty crappy and rust up a bit in the dishwasher, but they sure can saw through some ****. The ergonomics on the 'Rock -n- Chop' cleaver thing are pretty good, and the way the handle is above the blade on the bread knives is good.

If you like good knives, steer clear, but if you just want something cheap that will get the job done they'll work.
