(hey . . . I know that isn't a word . . . 'til now)
For say, in everyday use. Best Edge holding.

How is VG-1 in general compared to VG-10 or say . . . M390 or CPM-S30V ?

For thinnish shortish fixed blade use.

PS: I don't mean the 3V is made in Taiwan but the knife is made there. I know it will be pretty darned great. Not dis'in Taiwan.

Properly heat treated 3v is tougher, but VG1 is a good stainless steel that has kind of lost favor these days. The few knives I have had of VG1 were good knives. But I would pick 3v if it is a fixed blade.

Cold Steel only has a couple models in VG1 (solid and Sanmai) left now in their product and they will very likely be gone soon.

I'd choose the 3v and did as a matter of fact w/ the recon tanto. I am quite pleased too.

It can do kitchen duty as well as outdoor stuff like shelter building, light firewood processing, batoning etc. to list a few. Granted, it's too stout for slicing fruit as an example, and the tanto may seem an odd choice to some for what I use it for, but the performance speaks for itself.

Edge retention is better than the vg1 from what I could tell. Toughness is as one would expect for properly heat treated 3v (not a single roll or dent on the edge, even after heavy use, feather sticks, some carving of spoons and such)...I just wish they were made in Seki City, Japan.

Thanks guys.

Do you know if they will be keeping the Sanmai but using a different core / edge steel ? I would only be interested if they made the blades extra thin and the milder laminations were there for strength but since you brought it up I'm curious.

Yep . . . I am finding out lately, from using it, that it is hard to beat 3V .

Huh?

They are at different price points.

They only phased out the aus 8

The solid vg-1 just came out in 2015

VG1 is a favorite of mine when treated and used by Cold Steel.
I've only had it on their folders though, but there it was all I needed and I could ask for.

just my $0.02

The Seki factory that makes the solid VG1s is in the midst of shutting down production. No doubt CS will be offering a 3C SRK and Recon Tanto as replacements.
