John H could probably give you a correct (and more colorful) explanation, as I am new to this stuff myself.
A Usual Suspect is one who reads and participates in the emerson forums. Custom ownership is not required, but enthusiasm for the product is. Do a search on "Suspect" and "definition" or something-I've seen lots of cool definitions.
Did you get a hold of your commander yet?
If you dig the wave (and you will) you will need a SOCFK next!

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">"Usual Suspect" - Term coined by Les Robertson in 01/99. A person that frequents and participates in the Emerson Forum on BF.com. In fact it should be considered synonymous with "Frequent Participant". Custom ownership is not required, just enthusiasm for the products. </font>

General, you may already be a "usual suspect" and not even know it. Welcome! You will find one fine bunch of miscreants here.

Check out the "Emerson Custom Count / Glossary" post for more information....lots of great pics too.

Back in the 1940s they made a movie about a north African city. Had Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid somebody, along with Claude Raines. Raines plays a police chief who is "Shocked!, Shocked!" to find out that gambling is going on in a bar called Ricks. Anyway, after he plays a part in the shooting of a Nazi, he instructs his men to "round up the usual suspects" in order to solve the crime. "The usual suspects" then became a catch phrase to describe a group of people connected in such a way. (It later became the title of a very good movie, giving rise to the real possibility that John Hollister is actually Kaiser Sose.)
Some time ago, Les came across a nice Emerson custom and mentioned that it was available here, noting that he expected one of the aforementioned 'usual suspects' to grab it. Which one did. Thus was born the notion and title that the denizens of this forum carry.

The only things we're left unsure about are whether this guy Rance is really Rick, and if Derek plays piano...

Jbravo, excellent job but as a student of "Casablanca", please take the following with a grain of salt. Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Rick's Cafe American, Usual Suspects is first mentioned in the beginning of the film after Letters of Transit are stolen from German couriers. http://www.filmsite.org/casa.html
Dick

Jbravo and all: I must correct myself, the phrase mentioned at the beginning of Casablanca is "round up the usual number of suspects". It isn't until the last scene where " round up the usual supects" is spoken. Dick

I watched Casablanca again the other night, this time on DVD. Very cool flick.

Cluade Rains (Capitaine Renault) had all the good lines.

Dick, you get half a point. Renault tells the new Gestapo Officer, Major Strasser, that he has rounded up "Twice the usual number of suspects".

But your right, it's the end of the movie that he orders his officers to "Pick up the Usual Suspects".

Highly recommended movie. It's hard to imagine the effect the scene in the Cafe with the dualing national anthems must of had on audiences in 1942, when the movie was made.

John

There is a book on the making of Casablanca by the Julius brothers who wrote the script during the actual making of the movie. The movie has so many great lines and interactions and the actors do such an excellent job that it has become a classic film well worth watching and waiting, waiting, waiting.
Joke!
I have a work of pop art that shows a photo of an old outdoor theater with Casablanca playing. A stream of popcorn containers are coming out of the movie screen. I do get obsessd at times. Dick

Last post on Casablanca. Watched the movie last Sat on TCM after driving 400 miles to attend Badger Knife Show, then onto st Charles, Il for CADA Gun Show, into Chicago for Indian food. Came home took nap and awoke to watch TCM eating take out Sushi and drinking Huber Bock(best beer made in the US!). Thought I may have remembered some of the lines wrong when reading your post John. Picked up DVD of Casablanca and you are correct. First quote is "twice the usual number of suspects". Second quote is "round up the usual suspects". The DVD version is so much better in terms of detail, tonal range and clarity of sound. You can even tell that they are drinking Cordon Rouge in Paris! Dick. PS, It was the Epstein brothers that wrote the script, one of which was named Julius.
