Hello, I am in the search for a first anvil and have come across this one. I do not know the manufacturer (or the weight) and these pictures are all I have from the seller. Is anyone with some experience able to guess the weight and/or be able to tell the maker? And from that, if it would be a useable anvil, and what it is worth? Thanks in advance. I can not figure out how to post the pictures on here so if anyone could tell me how that would be sweet and if someone knows a lot about anvils I can email the pictures to get your opinion. email: smitty102000@gmail.com

Is that anvil broke and patched back together? I think that would be a hard pass from me.
Thanks for the reply. yes it appears to have some damage that someone has attempted to repair. But since I plan on using it I almost think it may be a good thing as it may allow me to get it for a lot cheaper and still be useable, I would think. But again I am by no means knowledgeable on the subject.

Check the bounce and the ring of that anvil and compare it to the bounce and ring of a good anvil. There will be no comparison. Beating a hammer against that broken anvil is going to wear you out.

I can only assume that you are fairly new to forging and this is a hobby(not talking down to you as I am in the same place). Just looking for context as to your plans and expectations.
The face looks like it would clean up nicely. If you are buying this in person I’d check the rebound with a 1.5” steel ball bearing. Great anvils will be in the 90% rebound range a piece of 1” mild steel plate may rebound 10-20%. If it will rebound 40% or more I’d offer $1 per pound possibly a little more. As for the weight of what’s pictured I guess your looking at about 150lbs give or take.

I have no firsthand experience but have seen some good reviews on the 66 pounds amazon/ebay Chinese steel anvil which costs about 100 dollars (google acciao anvil). Should be more then good to start with. That repair looks scetchy at best.

You didn't say what the chap is asking, but unless it is nearly free, I wouldn't buy it. It would make an OK yard ornament or boat anchor. As a forging anvil it is better than a rock, but possibly not much better.

Can you imagine what happened to that anvil to cause it to crack? The history of that anvil is shady AF and should be a hard pass as others have said

It wouldn’t even be worth the effort of moving that thing man.
Spend your money on something better.
You can make a post anvil really easy and it will serve you far better.

At the right price, I would take a chance on this one. I have a welding background so I would scarf that crack out and weld it up. The only reason I wouldn’t buy it is if it didn’t rebound well.

That thing definitely needs some work. At best it needs cleaned up and welded. At worse it needs to be heat treated and re-hardened.

If it was $100 or less, I might take a chance, but it’s hard to say without seeing it up close.

If the face is soft, I’d pass regardless.

I’d recommend getting a anvil from Atlas knife and tool if you could wait, he has a 65lb anvil for $300 that would be great for starting knife making or a 117lb anvil for $500 that would be all you’d ever need. His website says he is expecting both to be back in stock mid April.

$400:eek: he is nuts!
As Josh said, you can buy a great Atlas anvil for that or their big one for only a little more.

$400? I'm beginning to think his head must have as big of a crack in it as the anvil.

If buy some miracle it has a decent rebound, I'd offer up to $120 final cash offer. If he refuses, tell him to call you in 6 months when he's still trying to sell it.
He might get a couple hundred if he wire wheels the rust off.
