Forgive me for a simple question, but I’ve tried searching and can’t find an answer.
What is the bump at the front of the choil called?

The knife pictured is a Chaparral that I dyed purple, for no particular reason.

Heel.
That's what they're called on kitchen knives anyway.
Kick sounds better though.

Hi MFoley,

On a back lock, it's still a Kick, with or without a "finger choil". I imagine one would still call it a kick on other locking or non locking models.

On the model shown, it hits the locking bar about the same location as the lock bar pivot which prevents the blade from hitting the back spacer or spring when closing the knife. This is true of mid-lock or front-lock locking folders.

This is why I buy Spyderco lockbacks. I had 2 different axis lock knives from another maker and the blades could over travel and contact the backspacers on both of them, one actually had a metal standoff that rolled a part of the edge. After that I was done with the axis lock and now stick with what is to me a better thought out design.

Thank you. I was thinking about filing it off - now I know better.
